By day, he's one of the most unassuming people in all of Tokyo. A small, diminutive Japanese man in a leather jacket, his only unique features being bright blue eyes, oftentimes shielded by sunglasses or a careful look to the floor. He wears sweaters, works in finance, always pays his bills a day early and never gets into fight. But those eyes hide something. A secret. When the sun sets over the bustling metropolis, Kaito Watanabe becomes Daburudāku, literally translating to Doubledark. His meek quietness is traded for a solemn silence as he borderline terrorizes the streets of Tokyo as a member of Yamaguchi-gumi, the largest Yakuza family in all of Japan. He wears a mask symbolizing an oni - a type of monster in Japanese folklore - to not only hide his identity but also for a cold intimidation tactic for those he's doing "business" with.

i decided on an oni mask from Japanese folklore for him, thanks to their place in their culture.
oni are the demons of Japanese folklore, so it felt fitting for a character meant to be creepy &
intimidating to be wearing a mask made to resemble such a creature. there's also something very
unsettling about oni masks that i really thought would help to push the idea of him being in disguise.
i think there's something really creepy about a kalon wearing a mask that looks so similar to a human
face, so i decided to also use a pixel brush as well as some stark white shading to really push the idea
that it's so different from him.

explanation [500 words max]:
William chose this mask because of his fascination with folklore and the supernatural. an oni being a Japanese ogre like spirit he found it to be one of his favourites among japans wide array of spirits and monsters. japanese spirits are some of his favourites for their overall creepiness but also creativity in design. monsters from America where he is from are so common to him that they lose their edge, they often look the same as the main movie monsters and really lose the interest in lore and design. but monsters from other countries particularly Japan have a huge history of many interesting monster storeys and legends. all of them being uniquely creepy rather than another type of werewolf.
of all the yokai to choose from though he chose oni because oni masks are already a thing that people make and examples of other masks he finds rather beautiful and well crafted. he ordered his own oni mask specially made to match his fur colours and fell in love with it the moment he saw it. he often wears it to special occasions rather than just Halloween. however, on Halloween, he will wear it properly but other occasions often worn tilted off his face as more of a head decoration.

I have been lonely
every since I was alone

But then! I found a mask
that was calling me to wear it
I got the mask and I placed it on
And I felt...... like a new me
The mask is so bright and beautiful
It was sparkling in the sun
with the flower shining
I loved it in many ways
I wore it for many days
I made so many friends
with it! And I still wear it
to this day.
Its a mask that represents
friendship and it helped me

but Iv got nightmares...
Nightmares of being alone
I dont know how to get rid of them
I just wish it would stop! But,
it followed me everywhere

A bunny that represents kindness
that what i thought and that's what
the mask represented. I kept wearing
the mask since its the only thing
that kept me sane but one day
I hope that ill be making
friends without a mask.
I dont know what is wrong
with me. When i come close
to other kalons, they run
away. What is wrong with me?

Well to put it simply, Antigan is a nerd. A complete and utter nerd; what makes the difference, though, is that he thinks he's uncool. In all actuality, he's awesome, and everyone thinks so, but he suffers from a lot of social anxiety and self-loathing that he thinks people are lying to him about how much they like him. What makes him cool? He's a weaponsmith and metalworker, is highly skilled at video games and competes in tournaments all over the country, AND creates experimental paranormal devices to help influence and capture evidence of ghosts and demons. And he thinks he's not cool, do you believe this guy? Plus he's dashingly handsome!

His mask is a modified motorcycle helmet he created himself, and blends together his three favorite universes: the Predator, Venom, and Transformers. He spent hours doing the metal working, sculpting, fitting, painting, and had to start from scratch twice. He, of course, wears it when he's riding his motorcycle, and it offers the same protection as the most expensive helmets on the market. Plus it makes him feel better that his face is hidden, and it bolsters his confidence when he wears it.

explanation [500 words max]: Orion is quite the introvert, his monsterish looks tend to cause people to stare and really embarrasses him and wrecks his nerves. Because he spends so much time inside he’s become addicted to web comics, this costume is based off a web comic called Rise From Ashes. The characters in it wear bird masks with red capes, all of them have different masks though so this one is unique to himself. He made the costume himself and is quite excited to show it off Halloween night, the one night of the year where it’s good to look scary.

All alone in the deep, dark Russian forest sits a little log cabin.
this cabin is very small, and not very well made. it seems to most
unlivable, not even to the spiders crawling through the dark home
in the middle of this freezing night. However, to one kalon it is a
place that they know as their home.

Russian winters can be very cold, and mother nature unforgiving.
However, through the small windows of this particular cabin sits
a kalon cooly, their walls aligned with masks of all sorts. They are
kept busy, as it seems, with the making of what looks to be a new
mask, the many diverse materials spread about.

Through the dreadfully cold night they sit calmly, a small fire
ablaze in the midnight air. It seems to be the only thing giving the
kalon some warmth, but to them it seems as warmth doesn't
matter. As they work in a tedious manner, their eyes narrow in
concentration. A brisk air sends chills through their spine, and
finally they look up, as if searching throughout their small home
for an item.

Finally, they find it: three small blue jewels. The ones this kalon
recognizes as a final gift from its' mother before they had parted
ways many years ago. A transparent, wet substance makes its
way down the kalon's face, their neutral expression turning into
a frown. "Why must I feel so? This is surely a strange feeling,
and why do I need to be affected by this new substance? It is
very troubling.." They mutter, before adding the pieces delicately
onto the mask. It seems their work is finished.

"Thank you for saving me that day, mother. Without you I would
never see this world as it appears to me today."

With a single, swift move of the paw, the kalon looks up through
the mask and continues on through the dead of night.

Deep down in pacific blue waters was the cave of the king, rather my father. He used to thrive in his kingdom, the team was strong. But after a powerful wave of water hit us, the kingdom was broken and many were not to be seen again. I was young, was not aware of what had happened, but I remember the tension between everyone, especially my father. So, we ventured off into the cave, and ever since we do not have many visitors. He says to me that all is well, and we are better off now. But the oceans say different, and his mind also, I assume.

One day my father jolts up. "The eels," he pretends to speak calmly, I can tell from his tone.

"The eels? What do you speak of?" I question.
"No worries Kahu, our cave will be safe," he assures me.

He leapt out of the cave carrying a mysterious pearl. I wait a few minutes before peeking out the opening of the cave. When I did, I found my father roaring at these slithering creatures with anger, their faces were wide and could chomp anyone. I was a bit fearsome to see him up there, it looked like he has never felt scared in his life. One of the odder things though, was that the eels were intimidated by him somehow. It was strange that a cluster of them were just so terrified to see him, when they could just surround him in seconds. How could that be?

The king is an elder, officially to me. He can not swim as well as he used to, and rests more often. That indeed is fine by me, but it feels silent, and I do not do much either. The waters have populated more since the strong waves, but not many are united.
I am suddenly passed a pearl that glimmers.

"Open it!" My father seems clearly excited.
I open the pearl and gasp but hold it in as quickly as I can. It was a mask, but quite horrific and intimidating.

"This is the mask I used to use with the water snakes, the eels. They protected my kingdom and you. They come back frequently to small groups, but they never have a chance. All I ask of you is to keep it safe forever."

I am dearly shocked at such a thing, I cannot speak very much.

"I am grateful for your offering, please let me be wise and listen to your words." I speak in raw thankfulness.
I am now the guardian of the waters, I must protect and unite the ocean!
