Mother name:Xīng
Kitten name:Hoshi
Short story:
"Hoshi, do you know why you're so special?"
The small creature looked up, tears in his eyes as he looked at his mother's caring face. Her face looking somewhat sorrowful as she noticed the tears in her son's eyes. He had a hard day, and it was clear to be seen. The sniffling little fluff had been holding his head and crying for almost an hour, and finally, his mother knew what to say. Hoshi seemed ready to simply run into his mother and cry, ready to go on about how the others he had seen today had bullied him, and how he was sure nobody would be friends with him. However, before he could even try to say anything of that sort, his mother began speaking, wrapping her tail around Hoshi while her calming voice left her like a song.
"When I first met you, when you weren't even a little kitten yet, you were nothing but a star in the sky, cluttered around with all the other stars shining around you. Stars, they're bright things in the sky...small sparks of light against a darker world above. And when I wished for a child, all the stars were crying out to me, saying 'pick me! pick me!' and hoping I would pick them to be my darling baby. Though many stars that night were bright, twinkling, and beautiful, I saw you. You weren't as bright as the others, and it had almost seemed like you had given up. So I wanted to give you a chance to try again. So, out of all the stars, I picked you."
Though at this point, Hoshi would have said something, he couldn't. He had been bullied because he was mute, as well as blind. He couldn't see his mother like other kittens could. And he felt as if he could never be able to truly feel the love from his mother because of this, but his mother knew how to make that feeling go away. Xīng went to snuggle close, pulling her child to her so he could feel his embrace. A tune left Xīng's mouth, familiar to Hoshi. The lullaby he always heard when he felt bad, or felt unloved. A mother's tune that he knew meant his mother loved him.
"When the light in the world is gone,
The light in my heart remains.
Knowing that my child is there,
all may be gone, but he remains.
My only light, my wonderous star,
though it may be hard to see.
My wonderous son, above the sky,
means the whole wide world to me."
The female looked over to Hoshi, noticing that his breathing had slowed and that he had officially begun to sleep. She smiled softly, nuzzling the top of his little head as she said the last words of the night, reassurance to the dreaming kitten against her.
"Goodnight, Hoshi. My shining Star. Remember that Mommy loves you."
