"I told you to sit there and stay there!"
Wildeyes watched with concern as Mousepaw bullied the kits and younger apprentices into a seating arrangement of his own pleasing.
"Morningblaze," the leader called quietly and the young cat came drifting to her side.
"Yes, Wildeyes?" was the muted reply.
"I think our youngsters are in need of some wisdom," Wildeyes nodded towards the squabbling kits and the bullying Mousepaw.
Morningblaze hesitated "Me?"
"Yeah....tell 'em a story."
Morningblaze lingered a second, clearly uncertain about her task, then with a weak sigh she stalked over to the kits.
She tried to capture their attention by clearing her throat, but it had no affect.
Her eyes drifted around the grassy clearing and landed on a small blinking light.
A firefly.
In a rapid movement she bounded towards it and snatched the bug out of midair.
Suddenly there was silence and every eye was on her as the firefly blinked between her claws.
It was traditional to capture a firefly when one wanted to tell a story, but it was rare for a cat be able to capture one with so much ease.
Morningblaze took a moment to compose herself, tilting her head as she wondered what she was supposed to tell the quiet kits.
Then her eyes brightened and she began speaking
"Once, high in the mountains, far from the clans, lived a wolf. He was named Mortigem and he was strong. He fought often and he fought fiercely and soon, all the other wolves feared him and all the other wolves obeyed him. So Mortigem created a great pack, but they feared him, for he was cruel.
Indeed one day, he came upon a wolf from his own pack that was ailing. But instead of attempting to offer it aid and nourishment, he killed it, claiming that there could be no weakness in his pack.
But then he noticed that the other wolves began to leave without his permission, afraid that he might kill them next.
So Mortigem went to Gorvelm, a wolf who was nearly as cruel as Mortigem, but was twice as cunning. Mortigem asked Gorvelm "Why are the other wolves leaving, Gorvelm? I did not give them permission to leave."
Cunningly Gorvelm answered with cutting, cruel truth "They leave because they saw you kill the weak wolf, they fear you for your ruthlessness."
"But it was weak, I had to kill it," Mortigem said "If I hadn't, then the whole pack would become weak."
"How right you are," Gorvelm replied with a smile that would've made you sick to see "You are very strong my great leader, but you must also be intelligent. More intelligent than any of the other wolves. You must kill without being seen."
"But how must I do that?" Asked Mortigem.
"You must find a wolf who is quick and quiet and obedient, that wolf will kill the weak and wayward ones for you, while the other wolves look to you for strength."
Mortigem thought about what Gorvelm had said for a very long time. Then he decided that he was right.
So, that night, he took a young pup from its mother and began to train it. He was harsh and he was cruel and he taught it to be like him.
Then after many moons of horrible treatment, he told it to kill someone.
And it did.
It killed Gorvelm, because Mortigem knew he was cunning and he didn't want Gorvelm to try to kill him first.
After that, the wolf killed many others for Mortigem, without regret, without question.
But one day, the wolf was sent after a mother and her cub. The mother was old and the cub was weak and neither of them were expected to survive the winter. But nonetheless the mother fled with her child, down off the mountains and the wolf pursued them.
The wolf caught them, but still the mother refused to give up.
She pleaded with the wolf to let her and her cub live, far from the pack.
The wolf wasn't going to let her live, but then when she looked down at the cub, tired and scared, the wolf felt sorry.
So, for the first time, she disobeyed her master and let the mother and the child live.
For many days after that she wondered why she had done this thing, she had never gone against her master's orders, but she did not regret letting them live.
Over the next few moons she began to doubt everything her master told her and Mortigem noticed her hesitation.
To test her, he commanded that she kill a young apprentice who was strong and had no reason to die.
She hesitated at the last second, her heart pulling inside her, and she let the young wolf live.
Enraged Mortigem attacked her and tried to kill her, but the apprentice she spared came to her rescue and together they drove Mortigem away.
Then together, they returned to their pack and freed it from the rules Mortigem set over it. Never again was a tyrant allowed to force his ideas onto them."
Morningblaze made eye contact with each of the kits before releasing the firefly. Her gaze lingered on Mousepaw.
"That was quite the tale," Sandclaw said quietly, coming alongside Wildeyes.
She nodded sadly "If only it had really ended that way."
Ended with the wolf happy with her pack and the villain driven away, rather than the other way around.
