Venus was a happy kalon, but after the day she became meek, subdued and complicit, she never felt strong enough to fight but after being tipped over the edge her anger takes hold and the outcome isn’t the best, she holds a lot of grudges and can seem cold and bitter.
(An extract taken from Venus’s diary, the only thing she was allowed to keep since the day).
Today was going to be a perfect day, like yesterday and the day before that and all those days before that. But It wasn’t, it was the worst day of my life, we were happy, we had a great day in the town, we were really really happy, and then we went home and we played board games, and I won, I won all of them, I’m so good at board games, I know my parents didn’t just let me win, I know because they wouldn’t do that, I know other parents that do that but mine don’t, but as we were playing board games and I was just about to win, he burst in. I thought he was supposed to be the hero of the town, everyone says that he fights the bad guys and stops bad monsters from coming in, but I think that he’s the bad guy, he’s the bad guy and he’s worse than any monster. He’s bad because he took them away, and now I don’t know where my parents are. I tried to tell him, I tried really hard, and so no one can blame me. I told him that they weren’t bad guys, that they were my parents, that they don’t do bad stuff, I was crying, and my parents were crying, and then he punched me, and it really really hurt. He punched me so hard that I went to sleep and when I woke up, they were gone, they all were gone, and it was so cold, the stupid ‘hero’ left the door open so that the fire went out and I was really cold. I decided that I had to find my parents or tell someone what the ‘hero’ did, and so I packed everything that I needed and I put on lots of fluffy clothes because mum said when I was cold I needed to wear something warm and because it was so cold.
When I went outside, he was there; he took everything away from me except for my clothes and my diary and everything else he threw into the snow. Even though I was wearing so many layers, I still felt cold. The ‘hero’ had tied something around my mouth so that I couldn’t make a sound and he shoved me into the back of his sledge. I began to feel sleepy but I was cold and shivering but finally fell asleep. When I woke I found myself in the ‘hero’s’ house. It was a nice house but as he had taken my parents away I hated it. It was still cold, still cold now even though I’m lying right next to the fireplace. The ‘hero’ told me that I can’t speak anymore, to anyone, not even to him, and that I must be as silent as a mouse. I’m pretty sure mice make sounds but I don’t know as I’ve never met one, but I cannot talk. I want to but everyone thinks that I can’t and I can’t tell them what has happened otherwise the ‘hero’ will hurt me more and I don’t want to be hurt. When I find my parents I want them to know that I’m okay. No one has asked any questions, about it. I have to keep on living my normal life except I also have to live with the ‘hero’s’ family. I don’t want to get to know them as they’re probably nasty like him. My dad always told me that when you want to be sarcastic you should use quotation marks and so that’s why I use them for him. He’s not a real hero.
I really miss my mum and dad and I hope I find them soon, we would build a really big fire and we can be warm forever and ever.
Are they in control of their powers and how do they use them? What are their feelings toward their abilities?:
The cold never stopped but I’ve got used to it. It hasn’t hurt me in any way but it’s just this never-ending state of cold. I blame it on ‘hero’, I blame everything on him. I know now that my parents aren’t coming back as it has been years since they went missing. I understand what happens now too, villagers just disappear for no reason and I know why they disappear. No one bothers to talk to me, no one bothers to check if I’m okay, and I can’t speak to them and so now I hate everyone in this village, for not saving anyone, for depending on ‘hero’ so much that they’re all blind.
Venus woke up slowly, and then the constant shivering began. As she sat up she heard the familiar creak of the old bed she slept on. She looked around her room. It was the same as when she arrived all those years ago as she had not accepted anything from ‘hero’s’ family and so the room was bland. It had no colour, there was a small rug by her small fireplace which provided no warmth at all, well to her that is. There was a small bookcase, Venus, though hating that they were his books, had already read them so many times that she probably knew them all off by heart. A small window, which had no view as the level of the snow reached so far up the walls of the house that it blocked her view, and her bed. Venus could faintly smell the sweet aroma of the ‘hero’s’ wife’s breakfast wafting up from downstairs. Her mouth watered, and she hated that it always did, the ‘hero’s’ family were beginning to get exasperated by her bitterness, but it was their fault, she had done nothing wrong. She moved stiffly, her joints aching from not being used to the exercise of running quickly to get home on time last night. She wasn’t supposed to be doing anything after school but sometimes Venus snuck out early to just stand outside the village staring at the view. Yesterday she stayed a little longer than she was supposed to and the way her body felt now she knew she was going to suffer for the rest of the day. She carefully made her way downstairs wincing at every creak, when moving about the house Venus didn’t like to make a sound and so she knew every floorboard and which part would creak and which parts would be safe to step on but sometimes the creaks were unpredictable. She finally got downstairs and silently walked to the kitchen and sat down at the table. Food was passed to her and she ate. It was a simple action in the household and didn’t need any interactions, and yet the food was delicious and sometimes Venus just couldn’t hate it. Sometimes it was just so soft that it melted right there on her tongue and it was one of the closest things she could get to warmth. After Venus had finished she grabbed her bag and headed outside so that she could begin her trek to school.
Another fresh thick blanket of snow had been laid across the village the night before and so most of the villagers were outside shovelling and making paths in the snow. Venus kept out of their way, which meant she had to walk to the sides of the paths where her legs sank like in quicksand. Venus was used to this and was able to easily get out and regain her balance within seconds and with that, she made her way to school. Whilst she enjoyed learning new things the other students did irritate her and sometimes she wished she wasn’t the only one not allowed to speak. They were just so obnoxious sometimes. She groaned inwardly, hoping that nothing would happen today. She got to school without a problem and began her day. Around lunchtime, a siren began to wail and everyone looked up from their work in surprise. It was supposedly a fire alarm and everyone rushed for the door with their teacher shouting at them to file out calmly. When they finally got outside Venus could smell the overwhelming thick smoke, one of the buildings had somehow caught on fire. It seemed as if the whole village was here and then something clicked with Venus, if everyone was here, then maybe, just maybe, she could run away.
Her heart was pounding erratically and her breath was uneven but she somehow made it. She somehow managed to sneak back into the house unseen, grab her diary and warm clothes and sneak back out again. She then raced across the village and was now in the woods, running, somewhere, she didn’t know where but she ran. The cold was freezing her lungs, her mouth burned but she kept running further and further away from the village she had grown to despise.
After a while, she finally stopped, clouds of her breath spewed out of her mouth and out into the coldness. She looked around the clearing she was in and saw nothing but trees. She could faintly see a mountain in the distance and so Venus decided to head there, even though it would probably take days. All of a sudden she began to float and she squeaked in surprise and a small burst of icicles fell on to her head and she crashed back down to the ground. What in the world was that? she thought She got up again and concentrated hard until she began to float again, screwing up her eyes as she thought about it. She shakily moved her way upwards and upwards. She opened her eyes and stared at the mountain, not daring to look down for fear of falling, but this time at a higher height she made her way towards the mountain, almost screaming each time she almost dropped down. After an hour she finally made it, but when she got to a point where it was safe to land she crashed, luckily, landing on mostly snow. Venus pulled herself up. Conveniently she had landed next to a cave and she gently walked over to it examining it, making sure it wasn’t already inhabited. When she was convinced it was fine she crept in and lay down to process what had just happened.
For the next few days very strange things kept happening to Venus. She also discovered the reason why she always felt so cold, she was able to create ice, it kind of just appeared and then fell to the ground shattering into small pieces. She couldn’t control it, it just happened. Venus hated it because she had finally understood why her parents were taken away from her, it was because the ‘hero’ knew that she had special powers and he punished her parents for having her. Everything had been her fault and she had never felt so cold in all of her life.
She forced it, she tried to force control over her powers, every day she’d climb down the mountain and try and gain more control. But no matter how hard she tried she just destroyed everything. Trees were completely frozen and she grew colder and colder and her anger grew and grew.
One morning, a few days later, Venus woke up but she found that she couldn’t move, even though she was covered in blankets, she couldn’t move an inch. It was like ice covered her whole body. All of her limbs were stiff and she couldn’t cry out. Her heart sank, she was stuck.
A day went by with Venus falling in and out of sleep and then she suddenly realised there was a figure standing in front of her. “Oh! I’m sorry if I startled you! I was wondering if I could stay here for the night?”
Venus stared at the passer-by desperately; they raised an eyebrow “are you… okay?”
Venus shook her head.
“What’s wrong?”
After a while, Venus managed to convey her message to the passer-by and she was now covered in more blankets and a larger fire was set up. The passer-by laid down beside her, telling Venus stories of their travels. Venus actually felt happy for once. They understood her in a way and Venus felt herself begin to thaw and the ice was beginning to melt. For the first time in forever, she felt warmth. Soft snow fell around them and melting when it hit the ground.
The following day, feeling a little better, Venus set off for the village. She floated at times, checking where she was going and when she reached the outskirts she felt nervous. What would they say, what would she do? Would she return back to normal life? She pushed her anxieties away and walked in.
She knew what would happen in a way, but she didn’t expect it would happen the way it did. Standing in front of ‘hero’ and his crew, with the rest of the village crowding around, she felt anger brewing and she finally managed to do something that she hadn’t done in years, she spoke.
“This ‘hero’ of yours is not what you think,” she managed to croak, “why do you think our villagers disappear, what do you think happened to my parents, why I haven’t spoken for years and years? It’s because of him! He took everything away from me and from you!” her throat screamed out in pain but she wanted to make her voice heard.
“You are still foolish and young, Venus, I did this for everyone’s safety” ‘hero’ glowered at her.
Everyone gasped. “See! This is your entire fault; this is everyone’s fault for being so blind! You are all the reason why I’ve been silent for years!”
Her anger grew and the atmosphere grew colder. ‘Hero’ stared at her in fear and ice began to creep up his leg. “It is everyone’s fault that I was so cold. No one asked me what had happened, or if I was okay. You just believed him and it’s not fair!”
A storm was approaching and by now one of ‘hero’s’ legs was frozen solid.
“Venus! Stop!”
Venus shook with rage.
“None of you understand” she whispered dangerously as she walked out of the crowd and began to head out of the village. When she stopped to look back, a massive cloud now blanketed the village with massive icicles and snow falling heavily. Venus stared in horror. She had made that happen, she needed help, she needed someone to help her, someone needed to help control her curse. And so she walked, walked and walked for miles and miles searching for help.
Venus found herself on a mountainside, overlooking a small valley. There was no snow and yet Venus still felt cold. In the valley there were many houses.
This is a good place to start she thought…
