Fish Facts wrote:Koi, also known as nishikigoi (錦鯉) are a type of decorative carp. Originally domesticated for food, they have eventually become one of the most popular ornamental fish breeds.
Originally they where a dull grey or white color, but in 1914 they began to be bred for color variations, leading to the bright and vibrant fish we know today. There are hundreds of variations in color, size, shape and pattern - ranging from the iconic white and coral (know as Kōhaku (紅白)) to the gold, black, and green variation known as Kin-Kikokuryū (金輝黒竜)
They are omnivorous, and eat a wide variety of foods including peas, lettuce, and melon. Koi generally last a little over 50 years if cared for properly, but there are some records of individual koi living 100 - 200 years.
Koi are widely used to keep ponds clear of pests such as mosquitoes. They have been introduced to almost every major body of water over the past decade, mostly by accident. They usually revert to their original grey or white coloring within two generations.
