What are they hiding;
Silence.
That's all there was here. A deafening silence that permeated the riverbank. A slender viscet sat by the waterside, her pelt like a reflection of the starry night sky itself. She heaved a soft sigh, her warm breath billowing upward into the crisp evening air.
It's so quiet.
A chill went down her spine causing her to shiver as she watched her breath float up to the sky above. She shivered a second time as she heard a noise. A snap of a twig, her ears swiveled towards the direction of the sound. She cautiously glanced back over her shoulder, a figure cautiously stepped out of the shadows. His pelt illuminated by the moonlight as it hit it. The soft greens of his fur made him an almost ghostly figure as he slowly approached the female.
"Nereida." The male breathed in relief, "Have you been waiting for me all this time?" His large ears lowered apologetically. "I hadn't meant to make you wait."
Nereida gave him a small smile, "No need to apologize." She turned her gaze back to the water, gazing at the stars mirrored in the reflection. "I'm just glad you came, Farley." She admitted quietly, her cheeks burning a little when she spoke.
The male, Farley, shifted from paw to paw a moment before settling down beside her. He sat close, letting the heat from his body to warm her back up. "You didn't have to wait out here for me, you know." He smiled at her, watching her as she kept her head low but he could see her happiness in the reflection of the water. "Perhaps we should wait until it is warmer for this venture?" He suggested quietly.
"No," Nereida moved from him a little out of shock. She lowered her ears as she felt a rush of embarrassment. "I mean.. em, you need these herbs right? This is important, we need to do this tonight." She insisted, missing the warmth of his fur close to hers already. She met Farley's concerned gaze, "This is important." She insisted once more before standing to her paws. She stepped closer to the edge of the water, looking at the still surface. She took a quiet inhale as she began wading into the water. The water felt like ice, chilling her to the bone as she waded in chest deep. She looked back at Farley, "Aren't you coming?" There was a moment of hesitation before Farley nodded and followed suit. He waded into the water after her, shivering some as he made his way beside her. She smiled some to him, "Ready?"
"Ready," Farley replied as evenly as he could.
Nereida smiled as she lowered her head beneath the water, ducking below the surface as the drop-off came into view. She raised her head above the water for a moment. "Alright, get a good breath and then follow." She instructed as she dived beneath the water and down into the depths of the drop-off in the large river. She didn't look back to see if Farley was following her, she didn't want to run out of breath before she made it to the underwater cave.
The cavern was located well below where any normal creature would dare to look. She had only stumbled upon it by accident once a few months ago. It was a strange series of events that led her to discover this phenomenon, to begin with.
----------------------
She had been traveling the lakeside as she often did on her way to the neighboring pack for supplies when she had heard something. At first, it had been gabbled but when she heard it again it was clearly someone in need of help. She couldn't see more than a rippling in the water but she didn't hesitate to jump in to save whatever or whoever it was that was drowning. When she reached the rippling water there had been nothing and no one there. Perplexed Nereida swam around the area a bit before going beneath the surface to search. When she did her attention was immediately caught by a glimmer well below the water's surface. Blindly she followed the shimmering as she dove down deep. It wasn't until she was nearing the bottom that she realized she was running out of air. She looked up towards the surface, turning desperately as she tried to swim up but something latched onto her leg and drug her down. She panicked naturally as she was drug through the water a bit more quickly and beneath a rocky surface. She shut her eyes, certain she would die but within just moments she was pulled through a what seemed like a wall of water and landed on the other side. On dry land. She was coughing up a bit of water she had inhaled while she was being dragged into the bizarre cavern. Taking her time to try and catch her breath before standing to her paws and looking around.
It was a unique place, a strange but intriguing cavern filled with things Nereida had never seen before. Bioluminescent plants and rock surfaces that made the entire place glimmer and glow. Her eyes wide, fascinated for several minutes before she began to wonder exactly what had brought her here. She felt a chill on her fur as she gazed around, uncertain whether to be curious or afraid as she looked for any signs of another creature.
"Hello?" She called warily, "Is anyone there?"
There was no response, just a silent breeze blowing towards her from a tunnel up ahead. She hesitated for a few moments, thinking it would be wise to leave before she took a couple unsteady steps towards the tunnel. The air from there was oddly warm which worried Nereida but she felt something in her urging her to follow it, so she did. Her steps becoming less unsteady the further she trekked, her eyes filling with wonder once more as she followed it to its depths. She stepped out of the tunnel and into a large opening that appeared empty. She swiveled her ears around as she listened but heard no sound. Must have been my imagination or maybe just my curiosity. She told herself but then there was a bright light, as a bizarre but almost heavenly creature stepped out and stood in the center. Nereida was too stunned to move, her body frozen with fear and wonder as she gazed upon this almost viscet-like creature with a long flowy tail that stood before her.
"Hello, land traveler." The voice spoke, its voice like velvet. "What is it that you seek?"
"Seek?" Nereida stammered, she was seeking nothing here. "Nothing, nothing at all."
The elegant viscet shifted, eyeing her was a questioning look, "Strange. Only seekers may enter my domain." It took a few strides towards her, seeming to walk on air. "There is something you seek, isn't there? Something secret in your heart of hearts." The viscet smiled warmly as a spark of happiness lit them up, "Oh yes, I can see it. You seek not an object but a person."
"What?" Nereida blinked, thinking on those words before blushing fiercely.
"There it is. You deserve the affections of someone." The viscet smiled all the more, "Well my dear child, I cannot grant exactly that but I will grant you an opportunity." A flicker of amusement in her eyes, "I am the lady of the lake, and I will grant you this. In return though, I will ask a favor of you one day. A small favor really and that is all, do you accept?" Nereida was wary but she nodded after a moment. "Good. Bring the one that holds your heart here, there are many plants here that an herbalist and alchemist would desire. Bring him here and tell him your heart's desire, take this opportunity and it cannot fail."
----------------------
These instructions didn't seem like much but Nereida thought on them for a long time even after she had long since left the cavern and returned on her way to the neighboring pack's settlement. It was weeks before Nereida worked up the nerve to tell Farley of the unique plants and herbs found in this cave and offer to show it to him. As the mystical viscet had said, Farley eagerly agreed to come, the sound of those plants and herbs were something he was greatly interested in. And now there they were, Nereida leading the way back into this underwater cave. She stepped through the water wall, standing on the dry sand on the other side as she awaited Farley to join her. Once he had they spend a lot of time gathering and collecting various herbs and plants in his satchel to take back to the surface world. Time was drawing short and Nerieda knew her time of opportunity was drawing near and she needed to tell him as she had been instructed to do.

What are they hiding;
Stellara runs to the spot and looks up at the sky. Slowly, lights start to dance around her in the small meadow. She closed her eyes, and imagined that the lights were actually fireflies. Voices swirled around her. The gentle breeze became a furious wind. She let it happen; she knew better than to fight it. The world suddenly became bright, and she opened her eyes. She was in a city, one she had never been to before. A quick look around told her it was one from her own time. There was a single light bobbing in front of her.
Knowing the drill, she followed it. People gave her odd looks as she determinedly followed the light; only she could see it. It stopped at a little storefront, a few blocks from the neighborhoods. She saw the alley going along its side and went down it. She came around to the back. There, she saw a woman in black mourning clothes. Her face was a mess because of the tears streaming down her cheeks.
The woman didn't look up at her, and a memory flashed in front of her. Stellara went to the spot, and lifted the pot carefully. The woman looked up at her now, mouth agape. She carried the spare key over to the woman. The woman looked at her in confusion.
When she unlocked the door, she stepped aside to let Stellara in. The woman spoke a language that she didn't understand, but the intent was clear.
Carefully lowering her head, Stellara entered the living space of the store. They were in an open kitchen area. There was a mantle with many photographs and candles on it. The woman went over to it, and shakily grabbed a picture from the center. She smiled softly at the picture, and choked back a sob. Stellara walked over to look at the photograph. A handsome young man was pictured.
Stellara felt sadness in her heart as the light reappeared above the photograph.
The woman gasped at the light, and then it was gone. That's the fastest that has ever happened, and she saw it... The woman mumbled a few things as Stellara turned around to head out the door before she disappeared right in front of this woman. She had never met another person or viscet that could see what she did. She also did the one thing she almost never did; she looked back.The woman didn't look upset, instead, she looked relieved and at peace.When the lights around her began to appear and swirl, the woman only expressed mild shock before giving a small wave.
Then, she was back in the meadow. The moon glittered above her, giving so much light for so little that appeared. Slowly, Stellara made her way back home. This was her secret; the dead sought her out. They sought her out to finish their unfinished business,
to find a way for them to be at peace. The pull of their souls echoed within her own. Their memories were like wisps in her mind. She couldn't deny them. She was the keeper of souls, and it was her duty to keep that a secret lest her abilities be abused by others.
