Ombre was a sweet girl, she tried to make everyone happy despite the fact she wasn't liked much.
She had been bullied by the other kalon kits before and to avoid more taunting she had strayed away from the group and into the forest, chasing a vibrant blue butterfly. It lead her to a grotto where she found that the sun was setting, the bright colours shone down on her and formed her shadow behind her, it appeared to have a halo and wings for a split second, before vanishing. She soon felt worried as she was lost. she sat and sulked before noticing the butterfly she had seen previously! She turned all her attention to it, the sunset casting an ombre affect on both her and the butterfly. The butterfly stopped and landed on a leaf and she looked up. It was her home! Everyone crowded around her worried, she had been gone the whole day after all. After explaining she was OK she looked up at the butterfly that faded into the moonlight.

Warmth, comfort, loneliness...my first memory. A tangle of limbs and fur, soft breaths and beating hearts.
Four small, furry bundles scrambling for our fathers' attention. Me. Always the last to be fed, last to understand, last to learn.

Then, one day, I didn't exist for my siblings. I just...faded away.

I learnt to blend in with my surroundings, though my fur was as colourful as a summer sunset I could remain
- not heard, not seen -
I spent hours wandering, lost in exploration.

I used to catch Da Janus looking at me like I was a puzzle.
Da Erebus was always concerned.
They used to try to stop me straying but I just made myself - not heard, not seen - and escaped.

They thought I was mute, didn't understand I saw no purpose in wasting breath.
The first time I spoke was when my fathers' wanted to name me.
"No," I said.
"Why?" Da Erebus asked.
"I choose name," I replied. I choose my path.
"Have you chosen a name?" Da Janus asked tentatively.
"Yes"
"Well, what is it?" Da Erebus snapped.
"Secret" I said defensively. Didn't they understand how powerful names were?
"What are we meant to call you?" Da Janus asked.
I shrugged. I didn't care what they called me. It didn't matter.

I overhead them talking once.
"They're so different from the other kits," Da Erebus whispered, and his worry tasted like bitter morning frost.
"But they're healthy and thriving so what does it matter?" Da Janus hissed, and his anger tasted like a burning flame.

Only Da Erebus can get me to sleep. His voice wraps around me like the tightest, warmest blanket.
Chaos shows himself often when I'm around. Calls me his 'wily protégé'. I am happy to learn what he can teach.

Writing/Art: Cayley was walking in the forest when she saw a tiny, bright orange butterfly. She ran after it, but it was gone. She was at a lake. She looked at her reflection and washed her face with the water. She noticed some other Kalons chasing each other, so she walked near them. They didn't notice her, so she walked past. One of them stopped chasing the other, and the other Kalon ran into a tree. Cayley snickered, trying not to laugh. The Kalon that stopped walked up to her, its tail slightly swaying back and forth. It said "Hi!!" "My name is Kate!" "What's yours?" Cayley replied "M-my name is Cayley.." The excited kalon replied "Oh, well hi Cayley!" It looked at the kalon on the floor, still dizzy, and said "That's Cecelia, she's half blind." Cayley gasped "How did that happen?" Kate said casually "Well, she just started bumping into walls and stuff one day, and said she could only see half the room." Cayley said "I hope she's alright..." Kate perked her ears up at the sound of a whistle. "I gotta go, meet you tomorrow!" She waved and dragged Cecelia with her. "Bye!" Cayley watched and waved. [200/200 words]

it's the day of the school play. alexander is standing in line, waiting for his turn to go on the stage. his school was reenacting little red riding hood and he was playing a tree. a tree. what made it even worse was that his tree costume looked more like a twig. the school didn't have enough parts for all the students so most of the kids were just trees or bushes. or twigs, in alexander's case. the stage dimmed and alexander and his classmates walked on to the stage. the teacher had made sure all of the students had lines, and alexander's was pretty simple "miss riding hood, looks can be deceiving.." unfortunately, alexander could barely pronounce "deceiving" he repeated it in his head over and over but he could never seem to get it. he sighed, hoping he could just remember it this one time. the stage brightened once again and alexander tried his best not to look scared. the adults scanned the stage. most of them looked straight at alexander and they chuckled quietly, whispering to each other. "oh brother.." alexander whispered to himself. the kalon who played little red riding hood strolled through the forest. the other kids playing tries started to whisper their lines to her. finally it came to alexander "miss r-riding hood, be- looks can be de-de-si-" the parents had their eyes locked on him and were whispering "you can do this, twig" "-cevin-ing" he finished, feeling hot with embarrassment.
when the play was over, most parents came over to him "you did good, twig" they said. alexander felt especially embarrassed each time they did this and could barely manage a "thank you" before they walked away.
and that, is the story of how alexander started to be called twig.
