~Static~ wrote:Ki lifted his head, feeling wisps of snow melt on his nose and gently dust his fur. There was no time left to waste. He stepped forward, his pace picking up to a trot as he made his way through the first winter storm that was beginning to stir. He had to leave with his mate- The pack would discover the abandoned pups they'd been raising in secret if they didn't make the journey soon. With a gentle shake of his head to dispel the crystals of ice that settled on his whiskers, Ki pushed through a layer of thickets and into the hidden den.
The cluster of wolves in front of him startled Ki, and he scanned their faces. Hostility showed in every one. Some snarled, their claws digging into the frozen dirt below their paws, and others simply glared in anger and disappointment. His father's face showed the latter.
The larger male wolf stepped forward, looking down at his son with his teeth slightly bared. "You've obtained a mate outside of your own pack, Ki." He growled, his voice lower than usual. "You've broken the law of your ancestors, and it is merciful of me not to have you both killed for it." He turned away, closing his eyes. "Leave, before I am left with no other choice." He finished, his tone bitter.
Only now did Ki turn to see his mate, shrinking back from the rest of Ki's pack. They held one squirming pup carefully by the scruff of their neck. The other was resting between their front paws. Ki moved toward them, quickly nuzzling them in reassurance, and picked up the other pup. His mate followed him as he left the den, not daring a glance back at his family.
It would be a long winter ahead.
