Reason For Blindness:

"Moon Blindness" - Equine Recurrent Uveitis: A disease that, once it has begun, cannot be stopped, and, over time, will cause blindness in a horse. Unfortunately, her previous owners did not catch it in time, and it progressed into blindness.
How She Responds to Blindness:

Because she was not born with her blindness, Akasma does not deal with this very well. She always seems to be extremely nervous, with her ears and nose twitching constantly to try to get some sense of her surroundings.
How You or Your Animals Help Her:

At first, I wasn't sure what to do with her. No matter what, she always seemed to be so scared of everything, so worried that she trembled almost constantly. The first few weeks were tough for the pair of us - she was fretting about her surroundings, I was fretting about her. That was, until one day, when something seemed to stick in her head. Perhaps it was my scent, maybe it was my voice, I don't know. But suddenly, her nose was touching off my shirt, and, no matter where I moved to, her dainty nose would follow. Soon, she began to follow me happily, no lead rope, not even a halter. Just a dark nose keeping the pair of us together.
That was great at first. But I have other animals, and I couldn't be with her all of the time. That meant that, whenever we were apart, she would get more and more anxious. Again, I was stumped. I couldn't bring her with me everywhere - I have other species on the farm who don't really like seeing horses up too closely... and that's not even mentioning the stallions. This was proving to be a real problem. If I brought her to another area, then tied her up, she would panic in the unfamiliar terrain. I was at the end of my tether.
Then she met Hodei. We were passing through the pasture where he was exploring, and, as we got close, oinked to her quietly. Of course, she spooked at first - this was a strange noise and a strange smell. I tried to usher him away, but the little pig wriggled out from under my feet, moving his little nose up to meet hers, which was searching for the origin of this odd smell. I couldn't have been happier with her reaction. She squealed quietly, much like an excited filly, and Hodei answered with a similar noise. I stepped away, and, with much joy, watched her follow him through the pasture, following his soft oinks through the world.
Now the pair are inseparable. I even let him stay in her stall sometimes, keeping her company during the night. They're a precious sight - the 20cm pig and the 15.2hh mare, but friendship often comes in strange packages.

Mist really can't remember a time when
she was not blind, as a foal she could never
play with any of the other Shadow Walkers
because she was always bumping into some-
thing. Certain scars make her human friends
think that when she was just born her mother
had needed to get something and left her
alone. Probably, she was attacked by a
small animal such as a weasle or a hawk.
She ran away and went to live with other
shadow walkers who later became her family.

Now that we know what happened to
her we try to help her as much as we
can, though she manages quite well.
Since she came to Whispers she has
learned the layout quite well and now
can go most places without hurting
herself. But, if we take her to a new
place we make sure that there is
always someone with her who can
help guide her. We know that she can
move around by herself but we think
that sometimes she pretends to need
help just to get attention. When she
does this we come and talk with her.
Though, if you take her on a picnic
she will try to sneak some food.

She gets around our resort fairly well for
a blind horse. She does occasinaly bump
into things but we believe that she has
created a sort of mental map of the resort
in her head so she very rarley gets into
trouble. Though, sometimes she will
pretend to be in trouble just so that she
can get attention. The staff at whispers love
her so they are always quick to come to her
if she needs help or if she just wants to hang
out.
