her personality. dove's absentmindedness seems to get her in a bit of trouble. for instance, she constantly forgets to do anything requiring effort... although that might just be sheer laziness on her part. she tends to shuffle around in a tired daze, never quite aware of what she's supposed to be doing. although her unfortunate habits, she is in fact a determined worker, and gets things done when she needs to. being a full time procrastinator doesnt help, though. when in a team setting she inclines to set her own path and do her own thing, she finds other plumerians to just slow her down more than she already is.

future plans. i most definitely plan to bring her to life with art, writing and possibly some animations in the future! i really want to go in depth with my characters.

personality: one would expect a plumerian with a name and appearance like hers to be demure, respectful, reserved...

but that isn't so.

while certainly not a thrill-seeker, arte also isn't the type to give up easily. she's outgoing, easy to make friends with, and knows how to get what she wants out of people. being raised on a farm has its perks- artemisia is the down-to-earth type, not seeing herself as any better or worse than anyone else. but that doesn't mean she's the type to take abuse, of course. arte has a fiery streak, and though her skills at healing would usually stereotype her as passive and loving to everyone she meets, she defies that immensely. her ability to be petty knows no bounds, and if she feels at all vindicated by letting even her allies suffer for a while, she'll let them do so.

that's not to say she's amoral, though- she wouldn't just let someone die on her watch. but her experiences with life have left her somewhat bitter, and she hates the taste that not being in control leaves in her mouth. so she asserts her dominance in little ways- those who badmouth her get bandaged last. maybe if you speak over her she'll dump a bit more of the alcohol than strictly necessary on that open wound, see how that stings. she does not give out her kindness and her services to those she finds undeserving- only to those willing to pay kindness back.

she hates most of all the idea that because she was raised in a working class family, she's automatically less intelligent, strategic, or cultured than the rich folk. for artemisia, all knowledge is equal- regardless of if it's speaking a language, planting crops, playing chess, or saving lives. everyone is valuable. those who disrespect that idea don't deserve respect themselves, because they take for granted the people around them. this is the driving force in why she does what she does- not because those who do are inherently bad people, but that they need to learn to respect others through seeing some amount of tough love.

history: what do you mean, tragic backstories are overdone?

they're a staple of the solar exalted.

artemisia's life prior to "the catastrophe" was fairly normal, really. her life on the farm was far from idyllic or perfect, but it suited her. her siblings- all five of them- didn't give her a hard time or anything, and though the work was difficult, it was far from torturous. sure, the school didn't have money for fancy art classes or keeping up good sports teams, but who needed those? out here, your life choices were farmer, farm assistant, or housewife anyway. if you wanted something more, you moved to the big city- away from the challenge. you were a quitter. and artemisia was no quitter- she was content to a simple, quiet life of animal husbandry.

but life isn't simple.

the townsfolk ignored the encroaching plague like a taboo. no one spoke of it- that which was consuming each settlement down the road, leaving nothing but ghosts and empty buildings behind. a nameless tornado, an inhuman human killing machine. some moved away. some armed themselves. some simply disappeared. but no one spoke of it. they weren't ignorant, but what they were depended on the person. some were stubborn. some were apathetic. artemisia and her family were optimistic. certainly the destruction had to stop somewhere.

it didn't.

artemisia has blocked the event out of her memory for the most part. she doesn't remember screams, but she remembers blood and pain. she remembers the feeling of dirt in the raw flesh of her hands as she dragged her limp body to shelter. she doesn't remember whose body it was that she saw when she started crying. but she remembers crying. she remembers the sting of saline in her wounds as she wrapped her arms in gauze meant for injured cows, as she checked everyone for a pulse, as it set in that she was the only one left. she remembers the burning hatred she was filled with, fury not only at the one who had taken them away, but also at herself for failing to save them.

at some point this rage drowned out the pain completely. she doesn't remember when her wounds, though poorly tied with cloth, started to close. but she remembers the light that seared into her eyes, the hundreds of pages of tomes she had never seen before whipping up in nonexistent winds in a spiral around her, the feeling she needed desperately to do something, the feeling of power for the first time in her life. but more than anything, she remembers in that moment feeling so... just. as if she had something righteous she was supposed to do. something that was the reason she'd lived.

body healed and still crackling with arcane energy, she picked herself up again. not knowing where to go, she walked westward, aura fading into the setting sun as she chased the horizon. not feeling as though she was new, but as though she had changed. she'd have time to think about what had happened, the healing, the lights, later, she told herself. the only thing on her mind now was nothing more than finding a purpose again. she'd just keep walking as long as this newly restored body allowed.

but she was still left with scars- scars that reminded her that medicine could heal the body, but not the heart.

what do you plan on doing w/ her?: more writing probably. i also tend to use my characters in rpgs like pathfinder, d&d, exalted and such. obviously in games like this they're usually humanized/gijinka versions, but i do keep some aspects the same, like the personalities and design cues. here is a colored version of her prior to her major character development, as a fully humanized character. however, i really kinda liked the design i gave her, so i decided to also do another pencil sketch of her with the plumerian ears, feathers and tail and post-development. here is yet another pencil sketch of how i think her hat would look on her as an actual plumerian.

obviously the version of her here is as i would intend to play her as an exalted character. i'm pretty new to exalted, but imo it's more fun since it gives you a lot of bonuses for creating and writing interesting and nuanced characters instead of the hard and fast number rules of d&d and pathfinder. also it is very anime and every character gets to be a super saiyan with a tragic backstory (basically). as expected, what i've written is very open ended as to where the backstory leads, just to make it easier for me to rationalize whatever story or situation the specific campaign puts her in. for specifics, if you like stats and stuff, she is a twilight caste solar exalted with a specialty in medicine. in less words, the designated healer who is bitter over being seen as no more than a supporting role, because she has a desperate need to seem self-sufficient and useful.

in addition, as with all of my rpg characters, she will get inordinate amounts of inane scribbling proportionate to how long she lives in her respective rpg. this would be both by me and the rest of my far more talented party.

Yuki ♀

Yuki
Meaning: Snow

Yuki, sometimes called a snow angel by those who know her, is a very sweet girl. She tries her best to be kind, but has a tendency to submit to a situation at the worst times, which usually results in her, or somebody else, being hurt. She is very shy, but hates being treated like a girl. As feminine as her actions are, much of her hobbies are undeniably masculine. She loves sports, and technology, and has dreams of developing her own computer game. She might not sound like it, but she is your typical living-in-the-basement-of-my-mom's-house gamer. As a matter of fact, she has participated in several tournaments, though she has yet to come in first in one.
Yuki also has a great love for winter. It is her favorite season, not just because of the snow, but also because of the quietness that surrounds nearly everywhere. She is also technically a mother, though she doesn't think of herself as one. Her "daughter" is a snow fox named Luna, who is also very kind, but is almost like Yuki's violent side. While she won't hesitate to jump into action to protect someone, she often starts fights in the process. The two seem to balance each other out pretty well though.

Yuki dashed through the snow, flurries coming up in puffs around her paws. The skies were grey, but not a sad grey. Rather, a grey that invites one outside because of the guarantee of snow. Gentle flakes swirled through Yuki's fur as the fluffy clouds above poured them onto the landscape. Yuki ran and played and leapt until she was so tired, she was panting. She flopped herself down near some trees and carefully modeled some of the snow in front of her into a small sculpture of another plumie, none in particular. After putting the finishing touches on her snow-plume, she laid down on the bed of snow beneath her, and smiled as she let the snow land softly on her face. Why can't every day be a winter day like this? It's so beautiful... she thought as she closed her eyes and took in her surroundings. All she could hear was the nearly inaudible sound of snowflakes landing.
Suddenly, Yuki heard something else besides the pittering of the snow - whimpering. Yuki opened her eyes and clambered to her feet. She carefully patrolled the nearby trees and bushes. All she could find were abandoned bunny and fox burrows, yet the whimpering continued. As the snowfall began to take a turn towards a snowstorm, Yuki couldn't help but worry about the whimper's owner. She sniffed and searched, but as the snow got thicker, she could see less and less, but still, more whimpering. Desperate, Yuki began digging through snow, dead leaves, branches, and bushes to find the young canine. At last, just as Yuki wanted to give up, she saw a tiny black nose poke out from a nearby thicket. Relief washed over her as she raced over to the fox pup. She was small, with a black nose, and pure white fur. She couldn't have been more than 7 weeks old, and her mother was nowhere in sight. "Are you alright?" Yuki whispered to the fox, who was now quieting down. "C-cold... Very cold..." she replied in a scared little voice. "It'll be okay. I'll keep you warm. Tell me, what is your name? Do you have one?" Yuki curled around the fox, using her tail to blanket the two of them. The fox was quiet for a few seconds before replying, "L-Luna... I'm c-called Luna..." The young fox was quiet a moment more before whimpering, "Wh-where's Mama?" Yuki paused for a moment before replying, "Mama's right here Luna. You'll be safe with me." Yuki smiled her warm, reassuring smile, and bumped her nose on Luna's. Luna stopped whimpering, and quickly fell asleep. As the storm raged outside the thicket, the two of them were warm as could be as they slept curled together.

I plan on drawing her. A lot >w< She has a simple design so I can doodle her, but it works well in serious art too! I really connect with her, and I also plan on using her for roleplaying if I ever find the time to get back into doing that!
