Aragorn sighed, closing his eyes against the pale winter sunlight shone in his eyes, managing to find all the minuscule cracks in the stable wall, gently, or not so gently, encouraging him to wake up and start his day. He shifted lightly, the stood, shaking the straw out of his mane, watching it slowly float to the ground, looking like whips of gold in the sunbeams. A small noise pulled him from his quiet reverie, breaking the silence of the early morning barn. He swung his head around, searching the barn for the source of the noise. Seeing nothing, he shook his mane again, attempting to rid his mind of the fog that still hung over it, the result of a good nights sleep. He stepped toward his feed bucket, but froze when he heard a desperate scrambling sound near his feet. He looked down, suddenly spotting the afore unnoticed creature. It was a tiny feline, presumably a kitten, mostly grey but with white markings covering their legs and the end of their tail, making it look as if they had fallen into white paint. “Hello little one.” he rumbled, lowering his head to get a better look at the minuscule creature. It shied away from him, glancing behind it at the stall door as if wanting to escape. Aragorn took a step back, “No reason to fear, I shall not harm you.” he laid down against the far wall, so as to seem less intimidating. “What is your name?” The cat eyes him suspiciously, as if trying to decide of this huge creature was really trustworthy.
“Asha.” she said finally, in a voice barely above a whisper.
“A pleasure to meet you Asha. How did you end up in my stall?” Aragorn asked, matching the felines quiet tone.
“I am sorry about intruding, but I came home very late last night, I had been chased by the neighbor’s dog a long way away, and Josephine had shut the screen door, and there was something in front of the animal door. I was freezing, so I came in here. You seemed the calmest horse, so I decided that you would be least likely to be angry with me if I shared your stall for the night.” Asha did not raise her eyes from the straw floor for this entire monologue. “
Well, never fear. I am not angry with you. None of the horses here would be. They are all very kind to their fellow creatures.” He paused, sizing up the cat once more, “Now, what was a kitten like you doing out in the middle of winter?”
Asha’s eyes snapped up and het tail lashed slightly, “I’m not a kitten.” she said shortly, “I am six human years old, thank you very much.”
Aragorn bowed his head apologetically, “My apologies. I assumed that you were a kitten on account of your size, forgive my imprudence.”
Asha’s eyes softened slightly and her tail stilled. “It is no matter.” she sighed, “Everyone thinks of me as a kitten, no matter how long they have known me.”
“I promise that I will make the greatest effort to think you as the lovely she-cat that you are, and not as simply a kitten who needs protecting.” Aragorn assured her.
Asha smiled at him. “Thank you. That is the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me.”
Aragorn smiled back at her, “Well Asha, anytime you get locked out, or even if you aren’t, please feel free to come to my stall. I would appreciate the company.”
