Ambala's POV
I looked up, perking my ears as I listened for the strange human that had been following us. There was signs of her and her horse everywhere, making me nervous and skittish. Every twig that snapped and bush that rustled made me jump, fearful that the human would rush out of the bushes and attack me. When I started to find signs of her around our precious barn, that only made my fear worse. I kept waking up, watching the barn entrance nervously, only relaxing when Wolf Among Us returned. When he was around I knew nothing could harm me, but without him I was nothing but a skittish mare who could not hold her own. Who was she, why was she following us? So many questions entered my mind as I found more and more signs of her, making me fearful that she was out to hurt us, to hunt us.
The twig snapped, the human was nearby and clearly visible to Wolf. With a slight flick of his tail we bolted into the trees, vanishing into the thick forest and beyond, leaving the human behind. She did not stop, she continued her attempts. "Don't eat that! It's a human trap!" Wolf snapped, making me jump back and away from the delicious smelling apple, lowering my head and looking at it longingly. "Human trap?" I asked, looking up at him. "Yes, a human trap. They leave them there, wait for you to come and eat it, and then they capture you." he replied. "Oh, I'm sorry." I spoke in a whispered tone. I backed away further, fearful of even the delicious treats that were left for us. With a sigh I followed him away, leaving the 'bait' behind. When would she leave? I kept asking myself, as each day passed and she continued to show up, I felt like I was going to break down, panic. Like I had before, I ran in fear and could not find my way back. I was afraid I would run and never find the barn again, never find Wolf again, but the fear and stress was building up inside me with each passing day as she kept following us, watching us, trying to get close to us. I would not let her catch me, I will not let her harm me, not like humans had harmed me before. They were all the same.
I could not smell her, could not hear her, I finally had a chance to rest. The barn was empty and I felt a little lonely and nervous without Ahiga there with me, but knowing he was nearby and the human was not made me far more comfortable then I had been for days. I started to close my eyes, my exhaustion starting to catch up to me, so much so that I did not hear the creaking of the barn floor until it creaked a third time. My eyes shot open and looked towards the barn door. The men stared at me, their silver weapons raised and aimed at me. I panicked, backing away from the humans, flashbacks from a snowy day long before played before my eyes. I squealed in fear, by rump hitting the wall behind me, keeping me from escaping, the only thing that stood between me and flight. Ahiga burst in, standing between me and the nasty beasts before me, but I had no time to celebrate. I screamed at the loud sound, my ears somewhat ringing, but that was not what scared me the most. He collapsed before me, the only one in my life I trusted. I froze, then I sobbed, there was nothing I could do, the fear and memories kept me from advancing on the humans, instead I leaned back into the wall, the wood creaking under my weight. I closed my eyes, tried to drown it out as all a bad nightmare. I did not even hear the sound of the woman and her horse until they entered the barn. I watched the men walk out, I saw the white stallion rush out of the barn, but I was too scared to move. From one human to the next, the enemies always there and always so many of them. I rocked on my feet, sobbing to myself, wanting to approach Ahiga, but too afraid. I tried to drown her out, tried to block out her words.
"It's alright." I looked up, Ahiga looking back at me with the white stallion beside him, looking at me with gentle eyes. With a lowered head and slow movements he advanced towards me as the human advanced towards Ahiga. I looked at Ahiga again and then back to the white stallion. "It's okay, we are just wanting to help you." he continued to slowly explain what the human was doing and then comforted me. I calmed as I saw the pain Ahiga felt in his eyes fade away a bit, the human actually having helped him. He motioned me forward and without hesitation I approached him, wanting his comfort, wanting to be near him, that idea he could protect me from the human was still there as my fear of the human had only barely started to fade. I laid down next to him, nuzzling him back in turn I wanted to cry tears of joy as I realized and did not and was not going to lose him. I laid there, just barely listening to the white stallion as he spoke. The beauty and safety he described, a place without fear, a place where we would not be harmed. I felt some hope, imaging a place like that, but I felt an ache at the thought that it might be a trap, that we might follow them and be led to a prison instead of a heaven. I drifted to sleep, unable to stay awake any longer, with the comfort I felt having Ahiga next to me, the exhaustion I felt, and the fading of the adrenaline I felt all led to me falling into a deep sleep next to Ahiga, dreaming of the heaven that the white stallion spoke of.
