The first days of autumn it’s barely noticeable, it seems like it’s still summer. The days become less hot, and wearing black jeans outside becomes bearable. When you ride your bike to school in the morning, it’s a bit chilly in your T-shirt, and when you finally make it to school your nose is a bit red. It feels good though, a lot better than the feeling of your skin sticking together from sweat. As the days progress, it gets dark earlier. It rains for a couple of days too, something that hasn’t happened almost all summer long. One day, while going to lunch with your family, you notice that the sky is a bit overcast. The clouds aren’t light and fluffy as usual, they are thinner, the bottoms are grey. The grey is framed by a light blue, that isn’t the same as the Summer’s blinding royal-blue.
A few days later, the mountains are displaying an orange-yellow-red color scheme, with the occasional dead-brown of sagebrush. The usual green that the trees around your house hold has faded into a lime-green, some of the leaves are already yellow. For the next few days, it rains. It’s a light, inconsistent rain, so sometimes it seems the clouds are letting tears fall while letting out large, uncontrollable sobs, and sometimes it seems like the sky is softly weeping. The autumn colors are brought out and seemingly made brighter whilst framed by a colorless sky, and raindrops trail down the car window while you drive around. The horses by your house have become a bit more fluffy, and their usually-glossy coats are soon replaced by long, warm fur.
The first time it snows on the mountains, the orange-yellow-red colors they had previously displayed have long since faded, and the colors are soon replaced by the dead-brown of rotting leaves and tree bark. Your front lawn has also lost color too, and the trees in your backyard are losing leaves rapidly. Your family eats warm things for dinner now, like chili, soup, and beef roast. When you wake up in the mornings and crawl out of bed, it seems freezing, so your mom turns on the heater. You and your siblings huddle around it, seeking warmth, while your mom is making cream-of-wheat on the stove. It rains most days now, and the snow on the mountains is creeping toward the valley that you live in. The only clothes that end up dirty now are your hoodies, long-sleeved shirts, and jeans. The days are cold and breezy, and the crispness of the air fills your lungs and cracks your lips. Before you know it, Thanksgiving is around the corner. Your house smells of cinnamon-spice candles that your mom sets out, and the light fades from the sky early in the day. When your dad gets home from work, it’s dark, and once you are done eating chicken-pot-pie with your family and helping with the dishes, you go downstairs into your chilly bedroom. Once you are snuggled into the covers with your cat resting comfortably on your legs, you pick the book you’ve been reading off of your nightstand and read for a while.
Days later, you wake up early in the morning. You go upstairs into the kitchen after pulling your favorite hoodie over your head, and look outside. Instead of seeing the dead grass you have only recently grown accustomed to, you see a white blanket of snow in the ground. Bare tree branches sway a little in the slight breeze, and snowflakes dance lazily in the air. Your breath fogs the window up, and you pull back, a smile creeping up into your face. You go to wake your siblings up, responding to their reluctant groans with and excited ‘It’s snowing outside!’. You and your siblings race into the kitchen and stare at the overcast sky and the thin, watery snowflakes that glide together in swirls. Your younger sibling drew a face on the window when her breath fogged it up, and giggled. Even though you knew the snow would melt later on in the day, a knot of excitement forms in your stomach. Fall was coming to an end, but the memories of another eventful season will always stick with you.
^^ Sorry I wrote this in a weird point of view! This is just some writing of all of the little things I love about Autumn. <3
