Story (Max of 500 words) -
She walks the forest in the darkest hours of the night, away from the prying eyes of others. They have always asked so many questions of her. But some questions are not answered as easily as others. She would give anything to run away from it all, to venture out into the world in search of adventure, but something has kept her here far past her father’s passing, far past when others her age would have left. Something familiar…
The forest falls away into a small grassy plain, bathed in the soft glow of the night sky. Small wildflowers, entwined in the grass, shine in the starlight, and fill the air with the faint scent of honey. She has visited this place many times, and it is special to her. She can neither see nor hear the others here. The breeze ruffles her fur, and a soft sound reaches her ears, as if the open space calls out to her. She follows it, out into the middle of the field.
She feels something warm against her chest, and looks down to see the small stone, hanging around her neck by a thin silver wire, giving off a pale yellow glow. She does not know where it came from; all she knows is that it is hers. The warmness of the pendant soothes her, and all thoughts of the world seem to melt away. She feels the spin of the Earth beneath her paws, the groaning of the trees as they stretch skyward, the rocks as they are worn away by both wind and water.
But her fate does not lie here, under the relentless pull of the world. She has known it for years, ever since the night her father first took her stargazing as a child. They stayed out for hours, listening to the droning din of cicadas as they gazed up into a place of both darkness and light, and she felt them calling to her. She told her father that she wanted to go up to the stars so that she could meet them Her father told her that, one day, she could go up there, into the night, and see as many stars as she wanted. For the countless years since, she has felt their pull, heard their voices beckoning her upward into the starlit sky. And tonight, she answers them.
She knows now: why she stayed, why she returned to this clearing night after night. It was where she first touched the Earth. Now, it is the place where she will leave it.
The breeze begins to pick up, carrying leaves and petals up into the air in an upward spiral, arcing until they seamlessly blend into the night. Come, the stars tell her. I am ready, she replies.
She looks towards the sky, and she is home.
Item - A silver pendant containing a pale yellow stone. It glows softly in the presence of starlight.
