ＷＨＡＴ ＡＲＥ ＲＡＤＩＵＭＳ？

Radiums are extremely tall canines ranging from 8ft to 9ft in height. They live in all different types of forests, some tropical and some dark. Radiums can be identified for their slight glow. The darker their habitat is, the more the Radium glows. The feathers on their legs work as feelers to navigate through the forest. Their tails are used to scare off predators, and their tails come in even numbers. Radiums are well known for adapting to their surroundings. Because of this, Radiums are quite confident around other animals and, although they have little to no contact, they get along with humans too.

The wind blew fiercely this cold night, which shook the trees to their roots. Leaves broke away from trees and twirled in a dance as they slowly landed on the forest floor. A dusty path was shaken up by a weary traveler who was far from home. She had a look of curiosity as she saw the wind stir up the fallen leaves. The wind pushed her as if reminding her to huddle up in her coat a bit more to keep herself safe from the cold.

The forest was full of shadows, and shadows could be tricky and intimidating, so the traveler made sure to stay away from them as she bounded down the path. Her coat uncovered a large bag she had been hiding, and the bag tumbled down her back and on the dust covered path.

She stopped and looked at the bag with hesitation, before kneeling down to open it. The moon shone down on her, illuminating the bag and the items inside it, along with her bruised, cut, and bandaged paws. She remembered the fight she had gotten into a couple of days ago trying to salvage a few pieces of silver, diamonds, and gold. She shook her head and thought, Not worth it, and rummaged through her bag, trying to get a hold on something, anything.

Memories flooded back to her as she touched each individual item in the bag. She figured it would be a long night anyway, with the moon up in the sky. So she took to the shadows, the ones she feared the most, and leaned back against a tree to think.

winter coat

The soft, quiet notes of a song silently drifted across the room, muted by a crackling fire. A mother rocked back and forth on a creaky chair, a relaxed smile on her face. She looked down at her daughter, Catarina, and said, "I know winter is coming. Soon it will freeze over everything with its icy breath and make snow come down in its heavenly dances. I know you hate winter, but my dear, you must learn to find beauty in everything."

Catarina shivered and looked up at her mother. "Even in the most disgusting places? Like...school?"

Her mother chuckled and said, "Yes, even in school. Don't you like your friends there? They make school better and more tolerable, don't they?" She reached down and stroked her daughter's hair calmly, and murmured, "I know my friends did."

Mother and daughter sat together, humming softly, both relaxed and calm. They didn't dare think of what would happen tomorrow, because tomorrow was another day. This moment was all that mattered to them, the last moment they'd be together, but they didn't know that until it was too late.

The mother sat up and reached behind her for a box. It was a wooden box painted with pink flowers and white birds, fluttering around in a meadowy haven. Catarina smiled and said with a hint of excitement, "What's inside, mother?"

All her mother could do was just shake her head and say, "A surprise, I'd like you to open it." She handed the box to her daughter, who quickly opened it without hesitation. A coat made for royalty, a coat with ribbons and laces and two pockets to hide whatever little knick-knacks she could find. Catarina gasped with tears in her eyes and cried out. "How could you afford this, mother? And for me! Thank you!"

Both of them wiped away tears from their eyes, and Catarina heard her mother say was, "I only want the best for you, and what better than a cozy coat to keep you warm from the freezing winds of winter?"

Her humming was slowly drowned by the sound of the crackling fire and the winds howling against the small, wooden cabin.
