The legend of the Goulburn Panther
The legend of the Goulburn panther is a legend that refuses to die, for the past hundred years, black panthers have been sighted in the Goulburn area. Although there has been many sightings all across New South Wales, the panther of Goulburn is one of Australia's strongest sources.

For decades, rumors have floated around of a panther-like cat roaming the bushland of New South Wales. There are few pictures of this 'panther' and the most known one is very grainy but the black feline figure does look very Panther like.

An elderly couple were having lunch on their 20-acre property when they spotted the 'Goulburn Panther' when they looked through the kitchen window. They moved onto the balcony where they watched the animal for the next 15 or so minutes. Lucky for us, the quick thinking couple took a picture of the animal.

"Let's be clear, this was certainly no dog," Mr Gulson said. "It was cat-like in its movement but it was a bigger than a sheep." "We had the binoculars out. We watched it move. We know what we saw ... and what we saw ... 110 per cent was a panther."

Large cats have been sighted by rural residents across three national parks that connect across north and west Sydney- the Kanangra-Boyd, Blue Mountains and Wollemi parks. But have also been spotted further north of Sydney, such as Bobin, Firefly and Wingham.

Over the last 20 year, the government has treated it as more then a myth at times as the sightings are more regular but still occur 1 or twice a year. In 1999 a letter was sent to the then National Parks and Wildlife Service director-general Brian Gilligan. Then the head of Department of Agriculture, Kevin Sheridan warned:"The reports are becoming too frequent for us to ignore the possibility. To ... do so could bring into question government's duty of care."

Many people believe that there is a panther or even many out there, but there are still people that are skeptical of the topic.Who know's? Maybe the Goulburn panther is just large domestic cat gone feral, maybe it's a new species, or maybe it is what everyone thinks it is, maybe there is a black panther roaming the scrub of New South Wales.
