The mare is very feisty and loves jumping. She is terrified of bees.

Rules and Breed Standards wrote:These guys usually range from 12.3Hh-14.2Hh (or .3 depending) and are strong little guys. They used to pull coal from mines, so they needed to have stamina of a quarter horse but power and accessibility- making them muscular and stout. So please when entering, enter by the standards of breed! Thanks all!<3

Nimhe, Entry No. 1

__After filling out my form and constantly checking the shelter to see if my horse was ready to meet me, I finally found her in her stable, the first aid kit by her door and my name on the clip board on her door. Finally it was my turn to meet my horse. I was told she was attacked by a swarm of bees, and her recovery was very difficult, both for her and her veterinarians. She was restless in her stable, which was expected. I knew all the horses in this shelter had rough pasts and needed good homes. I had plenty of time to prepare myself for what was to come.
__I approached her slowly. I made no movement to touch her, but only to see her. She reared, she jumped, she neighed, she was very upset. I couldn't blame her. First she was attacked by a swarm of bees. If that wasn't traumatizing enough, her family abandoned her at the shelter for fear of vet bills with a dead horse. Recovering from thousands of stings, surrounded by strangers, and with nothing familiar in sight, not only is she upset. She's scared, lonely, and has no family.
__I whispered to her for a long time. I can't remember now if I had started singing as well, but she eventually calmed down. I believe that animals can understand human speech, or at least our intentions by the tone in our voice. I let it be known that I would be her family. My two horses at home would be her family. I would protect her and she didn't have to be scared or alone anymore.
__I reached out to pet her. I moved slowly, and she was hesitant. I was patient and let her come to me. I stayed with her for an hour after getting into her pen. We stood there, me petting her and telling her it would be okay, her standing, relaxing, getting slightly used to me.
__She hadn't totally warmed up to me when I decided to call it a night, so I decided to wait until tomorrow to take her home. On the way home I went through the names she would go by. I would call her Nimhe, the Irish term for poison, though bees are technically venomous. She had the sting and fury of a bee, and the willpower to survive, so Nimhe it is.

Nimhe, Entry No. 2

__After a few more visits to the shelter, I finally decided it would be good for Nimhe to see her new home. She was reluctant to go in the trailer the first couple days, but with time, persuasion, and many treats, I finally got her home. Upon arriving, she leaped out of the trailer and ran around, thinking she had gotten loose. I had opened up the trailer on the inside of the fence, knowing she would need to blow off some steam, especially after being locked up for so many months. The shelter only had one acre of land, and their horses had to take small turns in the field for fear of fights caused by too much tension.
__I watched her in the field for about an hour as she ran, jumped, bucked, and neighed. She was upset about the trailer, but after a few minutes I believe she was just happy to be in such a wide, open space again. She grazed for a few more hours and I decided to take her into the stables for the night. After giving her some water (she drank a LOT) and a blanket, she went right to sleep, the poor thing. She had so much energy, but it seemed to wear off so quickly in the fence. Had she really started to break down after all that had happened?

Nimhe, Entry No. 3

__I went to the stables this morning to visit Nimhe again. While she's getting comfortable in her new home, she isn't yet quite accustomed to me. I let her out into the field to roam for a while before getting into activities. Once she'd settled down, I gave her a treat and we just stood for a while, me petting her. I brushed her for a long time, but this isn't a really proper brush for grooming. It kicked up some of the loose dirt and shed fur, but I used this brush because it's old and would still feel nice along her back. We weren't in the fields for long before the autumn chill made both of us want to return to the stable. The dirt in Nimhe's fur makes her coat much less effective against the wind and chill. After an hour or two I decided it was warm enough to really get the grime out of her fur.

__I'll have to get new brushes after all this cleaning. I don't know what's gotten in to this poor girl's coat! Dirt, slime, grease, even grass! There must have been too many horses at both the vet's office and the shelter for the employees to clean these poor horses. I must have been brushing until noon, just getting the worst of it out of her fur.
__I finally got the hose and sprayed her down, then lathered her in soap. I scrubbed for a long time, and the soap was turning black from whatever grease she had gotten into. I guess she still had ointment in her fur to fight infections, which, with this disaster, I'm surprised she's doing so well now. That medicine must be powerful stuff! I hosed off the soap, then lathered her up again. We went through this process a couple times before I felt satisfied (and exhausted). But she was finally clean!
__I dried her off with a few towels and we headed back into the warm stables where I used one last towel to get her as dry as I possibly could. I ran the good brush (one that I wouldn't dream of putting through all the grease) through her fur and headed off to care for my other horses. I can't wait for Nimhe to meet Willow and Static. She'll be right at home.

Nimhe, Entry No. 4

__Nimhe was once again reluctant on getting in the trailer, so we had to wait a while longer for the veterinarian to visit us. Upon arriving, Nimhe recognized him at once and began flailing in her stable. Clearly she wouldn't let the man any closer to her, so he had his nurse examine her while he watched from afar.
__"I wish I could have been better to the horses in those stables," he told me, "but there were just so many that the staff didn't have the time to comfort them. We did what we had to do to make them healthy again. It would be up to their new homes to bring joy back into the horses' lives."
__Nimhe is quite healthy now, though she is due for some shots. The nurse handled the vaccines as well. As they left, the nurse told me one of the hooves ought to be cleaned and looked after. I obliged and set straight to work.

__I persuaded Nimhe to let me see one of her hooves; I would get to the bad one last, giving me the time to learn what and what not to do. The first one went well, the second, not so much. I scraped a little too hard and she kicked me. Hard. I had to take a minute to recover, and my leg still aches as I write this. I'm lucky it didn't break; my bones probably aren't very healthy.
__I did get the second hoof clean, and then the third I was extra careful with. Once those three were spotless, I gave Nimhe a treat for cooperating and moved on to the fourth, her front right hoof. It wasn't quite as bad as I had expected, but still I had to be gentle. She kept flinching and I knew her patience had begun to run short. So we took breaks, but I had to finish cleaning it tonight.
__I could tell she felt better and better as I cleaned her hoof; she gained more patience with me. I think she's starting to like me.

Nimhe, Entry No. 5

__The feeding supply from the shelter had finally run out, so now I can move Nimhe onto a healthier, less bland food brand. She absolutely adored it! I imagine she'll be recovering her stamina even quicker now that she has a more balanced diet. She'll be meeting Willow and Static any day now. :D

__I've bathed Nimhe a second time and have given her lots of treats since she moved in. She needed to put on the weight anyway. She is now a healthy weight and feisty as ever. Static will have trouble getting her attention!
