Personality: Marionette is a sweet and gentle mare. Despite her personal demons, she has retained nurturing traits. She's a bit shy, cautious around new people often. Mari is polite, but always seems to be wary. Besides this, the mare is quite adventurous and adores exploration. She is rather particular and observant, always noticing the small things. Marionette is intuitive, oft acting upon gut or instinct from a fight-or-flight sense. The mare seems to have a personal radar of danger. She has learned to keep her wits about her, never let things get out of her hands, like they have before. Mari had a hard time releasing control, as she knows what happens when she does. She tries hard to keep composure. Marionette is alert, her guard seemingly never down. She is friendly and kind, yet at the same time Marionette keeps to herself more than anything else. She's grown to be more reserved, quieter. Mari is a wise soul, older in spirit than she is in years. She relies heavily on loyalty, careful with her trust, but easy to trust herself. Marionette is a secret-keeper, yes. She's a flexible mare, able to adapt quickly. Mari has learned many skills and lessons in her time.

History: Marionette's history is a dark and occasionally blurred one. It is often confusing and hard to talk about. Mari was born a forest dweller, tucked away in a small horse ranch far into the woods. The little filly was often sickly but adored her surroundings and life - it was one of the best times of her life. Had she stayed there, it is likely she would've grown up normally and without complications - but that can't simply be the story, of course not.

Curious little Mari did love where she lived, so much she wished to explore more. Throughout many nights, she worked at manipulating the fence she was confined by - despite having tons of space. In a far corner not typically visited by the group of horses, a small hole formed, one just large enough for a small horse to slip through; perfect for Marionette. She bided her time for just a little while, calculating her escape and exploration carefully. Finally, her perfect chance arrive. Late one night, Mari slipped out into the free forest and fresh air.

It was great at first. Marionette took off into the deep woods, joyous. She took in all the new scents and sights, stopping to play with some forest animals or beside a clean, fresh stream to drink. What a life. The filly thought, she could get used to this. She wouldn't mind always being here, free. But she knew returning home would be better, and Mari wouldn't want to be away from all she knew so long. Yet as the night stretched on, and Marionette desperately attempted to retrace her steps, the filly came to the conclusion that she was utterly lost. In her confusion, she had even received a deep cut on her back leg. Distraught, she looked for some indication of home. As Marionette continued walking, growing tired and hungry, she began to hear the distant noise of cars, and perhaps a glimpse of headlights. Yes, certainly she could get home from there. Happily, she skidded into the road, narrowly missing the cars on it.

A horse trailer and truck were coming head on, and Marionette was stricken. It screeched to a halt just in front of her. A raggedy older man and an odd woman hopped out of the car, and suddenly the road seemed dead. Something about this couple gave Mari such an odd, unhappy feeling. No, no, she should not be here. This was bad news.

Marionette backed up rapidly, but her spindly, awkward legs gave out and she tumbled downward. The old man snickered and walked right to her, towering. He slipped a rough, scratchy rope over her neck and nudged her to her feet. Nothing about his actions were sweet or nurturing, though. Always menacing, foreboding. Mari had made a terrible mistake, she knew, as the heavy metal doors to the trailer slammed shut, locking her within.

What a terrorizing thing it is, to be rolling around the back of a dirty trailer, slamming against walls, the only light source an occasional reflection from a headlight. As Marionette was relentlessly thrown about, the cut on her leg began to ache more and more. She stayed near to the ground, keeping herself from standing to prevent further injury. It seemed like hours had passed when the trailer rolled to a stop. The exhausted filly lifted her head as light flooded into the little box. There, throwing shadows, was the couple. "She's a beauty," the woman said, taking her by the rope. For a while, she was kinder to her. The woman brushed Mari, put her in a nice enough stall. The man was gruff and rougher, but the woman was alright.

"Ah, we found a good one." Marionette tilted her head at that. Found? Were they keeping her? Of course not, she needed to go home. As time went by, she found that no, he was not going home. Her cut got worse and worse until finally the woman looked at it closer. "Ooh, no good. I'll fix you up real quick now." As Mari stood there, her cut was stitched up, painfully. She struggled to no avail, panting. The woman harshly stopped her, but did a good enough job on it. Marionette limped for a long while, though slowly her leg healed. The stitches helped greatly.

Time went by. The vision of her old home blurred. Quietly, things progressed, and Mari adapted. It was hard at first. She was greatly confined, which was no help growing from mare to filly. She was always fed, but that never meant life was good. Her stablemates had the same life, and about once a month or so, the couple would bring in some new, wide-eyed horse that was clearly stolen away from others. About as often, a different horse would leave. Marionette always wondered if she would leave, and when. The small spaces and hardly any time in the open, as well as constant change within the stable, was never the worst, though.

Perhaps her leg had been stitched up. Perhaps it had gotten better. But it did not change her owners. The man was always bad - rough, abusive, crude. He was quick to use a whip and quicker to yell and smack at horses. What was worse, possibly, was the way the woman deteriorated, though. She was odd, but she was typically kind enough. As time progressed, however, she began to change. Perhaps it was her husband's personality that drove it. It is unknown. But Marionette noticed the lady start to become even worse than the man. Slowly, she became quiet yet short-tempered and cruel. Life became bad.

The times when Mari rebelled, she learned quickly to not. She learned to shut her mouth and follow all orders, all directions. Never show stubbornness, never resist. The bruises, long gone, and old scars taught her. Marionette became a puppet - everything was out of her control. The mare let go. She forgot. Her life was small and unimportant. Unproductive.

Suddenly, though, one day, after many years, after Mari had all but given up, she was given a chance. For just a moment, her stall door was left wide open. Since letting herself be a puppet, the mare had received more freedom. For years she had never abused it, never made more attempts. But now, suddenly, all her aspirations and ideas and thoughts came out. Marionette broke free from her thin strings. She broke. Away she went, out the stall door and out the barn door. Quickly, quickly. Mari slipped away from the woman's arms, and the man's fist. She tumbled into the forest, just like those many nights before. Oh, sweet freedom.

After many eves of travel, Marionette came upon a different horse ranch where she was found by a stable hand. Naturally, the mare was cautious, but ended up being caught. These people were kind, though. They cared for her properly. They did not return her to her old home, but this time Mari didn't quite mind. Now, she was healthy. Her coat shined, her legs were strong. She filled out beautifully. Marionette was no longer a puppet.
