First Encounter
Today was the day, the day I would meet my brand new tolter that I would have to try my best to tame and welcome into a new home. I smiled, watching the new horse trot into the grounds of the field and to the barn area. A beautiful boy, a sooty buckskin leopard appaloosa. Trotting towards me for an inspection, I gently gave him a rub on the neck, getting him used to my touch and scent, letting him know I was here to take care of him and give him a home, with no intention of harm. I brought out some hay and sugar cubes as a welcome treat, and he was unsure at first, but after a bit of looking around making sure he steadily began to chew on the sugar cube, accepting them. He was still quite un-accepting of me though, backing away many times when I approached, but I knew it would take time. The fact he accepted that neck rub meant at least he wasn't feral enough to not accept humans which was good. I decided to let him get used to his home first so I began bringing him towards the stables as if it was a tour.

Adjusting to the New Home
As I began leading him towards the stables with another sugar cube in hand, he sniffed the grounds and looked around at the other few horses who were grazing among the fields. When we reached the stable, I led him inside to the stall he would be living in. I had already added water, feed, and hay in advance so he would feel more comfortable. He walked inside when I threw the sugarcubes in. He of course ate the sugarcubes but then realized too late about the fact he was contained in a stable now. He reared up for a second, whinnying in panic, but I calmed him down with an apple that I left in the stable storage. After eating, he looked around his stable, actually beginning to enjoy the peace of the room and realizing a bit more that he would be able to have everything he didn't have much of previously. After a little, I decided to let him out into the open area of the stable and let him get comfortable with his halter.

Free Spot- Naming Him
While going over to the supply rack, I decided to also figure out a name for him. Hmm... Leo...Fijore..Liam...Shiroe...Iiro.. Yes! Iiro would work. It fit him. "Hey, you have name now! It's Iiro! (ei-eir-row)" I called out to him. He turned towards me, startled by my loud voice. "oops" I muttered and giggled. "Your new name is Iiro." I said again, calmly. He flicked his ears and tilted his head, probably in confusion but I'd like to think he understood that he had a name now. He bobbed his head up and down and this time I felt like he truly did understand somehow, but then again be probably just did that out of coincidence since horses do that quite a lot.

Introduction of the halter
The halter I had prepared was a white one with black stripes running top to bottom. While I getting the halter ready, the horse was just looking around the stable, wandering a bit. I watched him wander and then smiled, walking towards him, and patting his head. He moved a bit away again. I gave him another apple and as he was distracted and chewing it I put his halter on and, fastened the straps so that they weren't too loose or tight. As soon as the halter was secured, I backed away, knowing he would probably panic, and he did. Iiro shook his head violently, trying to get the halter off. "Calm down Iiro." I tried to speak in a comforting manner, slowing moving towards him and setting my hand on his forehead. Iiro stopped shaking his head and stared at my face, calming down. "Come on now, I need to introduce you to the other horses here." I spoke, chuckling since I knew he wouldn't understand. I slowly attached a lead rope to his halter and began to lead him to the fields where the others were grazing.

Meeting A Friend
I untied his lead as I brought him over to the field where the other horses were. I decided to leave his halter on though, for the sake of letting him get more used to it. As soon as I untied the lead, he ran towards a mare I owned named Sonata. Sonata was a young five year old dark dapple grey tolter. Sonata was quite surprised as he suddenly came up behind her. She turned around to face him, standing her ground. He whinnied, and then neighed at her. She neighed back and then ran off. Iiro ran off after her, quickly catching up, as if they were competing. I laughed, "Looks like he has a new friend already."I mumbled. The other horses on the field turned to glance at him, acknowledging his presence but paid no mind and continued grazing since it wasn't out of the ordinary to get a new stable member, though there indeed hasn't been one in awhile. I went back to the stable and cleaned up the compartments of the other horses while they were out grazing. After a bit, I went back out to bring the horses in for the night since it began to get late and then also get Iiro used to me a bit more and earn his trust,

Gaining Your Horse's Trust
After I brought my horses into the stables and closed the gates, I went over to Iiro's compartment. When he noticed me approaching he backed away a little again, startled. I reassured him with a calm voice, "It's just me Iiro, it's all okay." Iiro approached the gate a little more. I rubbed his neck again, handing him another treat I brought this time, which happened to be a carrot. I knew I was spoiling him with many treats but it would just be for the first day or two to get him comfortable and gain his trust. I let him sniff my hand as he held the carrot in his mouth, not eating it just yet. He then chewed up his carrot and licked my face. Whoa that was unexpected, alright, well at least I can be sure he's definitely trusting me more but getting covered in horse slobber isn't exactly the result I was hoping for, haha. After awhile more of talking to him , giving him pats, treats, and rubs, he finally seemed to not cower away as much when I first encountered him. I took his halter off and set it down on the rack on the wall where I hung all my of my horse supplies like halters, saddles, leads, and etc. I decided on letting him rest in his new home the rest of the night and I would try to get him used to a saddle the next day. So, I simply shut off the lights in the stables and went to my home, and to sleep.

First Time with a Saddle
The next morning, I woke up early as usual to let the horses out for their early morning grazing. I let everyone horse besides Iiro out first so I could have the leisure of trying to get him used to a saddle alone, so he wasn't pressured by the horses he hadn't gotten very used to yet, especially Casanova, who tended to be an awful heck of a show off. I took the saddle I had prepared for him off the rack and then went over to his stall and let him out into an different field. I had already put his halter back on him while I was letting the other horses out so I once again led him there using a lead that I had attached to it. Once he was out in the open area usually used for training but it wasn't being used at the moment since I was in the middle of cleaning it so I could let it undergo renovation after I hired someone. Once I tied his lead to a fence, I put began to fasten the saddle on him. He calmly let me put it on him but after doing so, he started walking in circles on an attempt to see what was on his back but that just made the the lead get caught on the fence, making himself get stuck. I face palmed. It was good he was accepting the saddle but the fact he's already gotten stuck isn't. I sighed and then began to untangle the lead from the fence. After 10 minutes I finally got it free and I decided to test him to see how he did in some ground work.

Ground Work
I knew the normal leading standards he would easily achieve, considering he looked very comfortable being led from both a partner and lead position. He also seemed to be okay with bodywork as well, now trusting me when I groomed him or gave him rubs and etc. Concluding I didn't need to go through that again, I decided to just move into circle work after teaching him how to yield to physical and driving aids. Through body language, I asked Iiro to move around me in a circle as I held the lead. I slowly taught him to start the circle, slow down, speed up, halt, and change direction. He seemed to be getting the hang of it pretty well, which was a great sign that he wasn't stubborn or nervous. A great start! Maybe he could handle being ridden, I thought.

First Ride
I steadily moved closer to him as I still held the lead in my hand. I stepped onto him, getting into the saddle. He was surprised, and bucked me off into the dirt. "Okay, definitely not ready being ridden." I coughed, dirt in my face. I stood up and dusted myself off. Iiro came over to me quickly, probably sorry about what he did. Seeing his warm intentions, my face lit up and I attempted to ride him again. This time, he held his place and let me do as I wished. I took rode him for a lap around the old dusty track and he seemed to enjoy it, surprisingly. He seemed like he was definitely not a stubborn horse and actually one that showed great potential, unlike one of my other tolters, ahem. I do love all my horses though, nonetheless. I was even more happy to have a new horse join the stable too, especially considering he had never really been handled much by humans. Such a sweet boy. I smiled, thinking as I took him for one more lap before bringing him back out to the fields and unsaddling him, letting him have a graze too and I went back to do the daily cleaning of the stables.

{note: im sorry i had to do this quite late, just a lot has been going on in my life, school, depression and other things i don't want to talk about, i hope it's not too late for your liking though ^^}
