Favorite childhood toy: When Salem was young he tripped over a stuffed animal in a paddock far away from the stables. It had been left there for some time and its white coat was smudged with grime; it gave a weak murmur of noise when he trod on it but otherwise remained silent. Salem, who was still too young to fully comprehend the idea of human technology, carted the toy back to his mother for her reliable expertise. After a short discussion, he agreed to leave it on the house's patio for the woman who lived there. His mother assured him she would know exactly what to do with it.
Three days later the woman approached him in a grazing field. He stood beside his mother, still slight to her bulky height, cast in her shadow. He watched the lady curiously as she held a little stuffed animal out to him and in a bolt of memory realized what it was; that small bunny plushie he'd uncovered in the grass. He took it from her gingerly, using only his lips, and then pranced around his mother tossing his head to make the bunny's gold wings flutter. It was only upon accidentally smushing the angel between his head and his mother's stomach that he understood she could speak. She said in a soft, high voice: "I'm your guardian angel. I'm your special friend."
This absolutely floored Salem. He had never had a talking friend before. He fondly called the little toy Angela and carried it with him wherever he went, setting it beside his hooves in the grass when he gradually took to solid foods, bringing her by one white arm into the stables to settle into the hay with him, tucked in next to his belly. Eventually her batteries wore out and her speech deteriorated into a strange rasping sound, but Salem kept her still. She remains in his stall to this day, sitting on a small perch towards the back.
