Tolter's name: Pretty Little Liar // Lygari (icelandic for liar)

    Gender: Mare

    Halter: like this, if possible

    Writing Piece:

Lygari snorted as the lights flickered off with the snap of a switch, the door sliding closed. A few seconds of shuffling and clicking later and the barn was locked up for the night, most tolters already dozing off.

But Lygari’s fun had just begun.

The devilish mare waited until the silhouette of the pathetic human that had locked her in there had disappeared over the hill before turning away from the tiny window at the back of the stall, bright blue eyes glittering mischievously. Just the faintest bit of moonlight shone through various cracks in the stable wall, creating a mosaic of light and dark on the stable aisle. Lygari pressed the side of her head against the bars near the front of her stall, trying to catch a glimpse of the lock. A few well-placed kicks later, and her stall door swung open, releasing her to destroy everything in her path.

And that’s exactly what she did.

Just as the sun began to rise above the horizon, Lygari stopped to survey her doings. Halters and lead lines were strewn all over the floor, a jungle of colors all mixed up. Various accessories were thrown about as well, most half-smashed. Hay was dumped along with any water she could get her hooves on, and some saddle soap mixed in. Content with the mess she had created, Lygari flicked her ears, catching the sound of the human returning to plan the morning activities and feed their animals.

She waited until the human was nearly at the stable door before trotting into her stall, pulling the door closed behind her. With a final glance at the ruined stable, Lygari lifted her head and made a sound almost identical to a human’s whistle, a three-note tune. From around the corner trotted the barn dog, tongue lolling, following the human’s command for him to approach them. He walked right into the middle of the mess, reaching down to sniff at something right as the human slid the door open.

Lygari was as close to smiling as a horse could get, listening to the human scream and scold the dog while pretending to be unsettled. They never caught her; she always found a way to place the blame on something else, or make it seem like an accident. By day, she was a sweet little obedient mare, but when the moon rose into the darkened sky, her eyes would shine with a devilish glint, ready to cause trouble.

Now she only had to wait until nighttime to wreak havoc once again.

Tolter's name: Twenty-four Carrots "Orla"
Gender: Mare
Halter: Dark brown leather with gold studs and gold buckles

Writing Piece: {920 words}
Orla could hear the other adolescents sniggering again. She was out of breath from running, but she hadn't even gone fast. Not to their standards at least. She practised and practised, but she just couldn't do it. She didn't have much longer to prove to her peers and the humans that she was worthy of training for racing. The next day she caught them smirking at her while she was dancing and prancing in he furthest corner of the paddock. She ran away and hid, feeling humiliated and unwanted. It wasn't long before her disappointed owners decided to sell her off to another home. Orla was told by a particularly snobbish filly, "You know you're just a failure? Well, they are selling you off, you'll never be successful." Orla had been trying so hard and putting on such a brave face that this was just the straw that broke the camel's back. She was depressed and kept herself to herself for days, ignoring any horse or person that came near her. She didn't fight when they bundled her into the trailer, but she ignored the peace offerings that her new owner held out. The new owner had second thoughts about taking her because she was so down, but her previous owner assured her that she was just shy and off they went. When they arrived at a shiny stables Orla was put in a large and well equiped stall next to a glorious rose grey mare. The mare lent her head out the door and greeted Orla cheerily, "Welcome little one!". The mare didn't give up easily when Orla didn't reply. She introduced herself as Jewel and starting chatting to the silence. Orla listened despondently until Jewel mentioned 'dressage'. "What's dressage?" she half-murmured half-whispered. "Why don't you know darling? It is an art form, a beautiful sport where we can show off all our best moves." with a flourish of her mane Jewel did a levade in her spacious stable, lifting both front legs off the ground in a sleek movement. "That's a sport?!" Orla exclaimed. "So you do have a voice little one! Yes, I believe it is the best sport out there" the glamourous mare grinned.

Six years later...
Orla was performing her favourite move for the adoring crowds, the levade, the exact one that had inspired her those years ago. She gracefully lifted her front legs as if in salute to her deceased friend and mentor. Jewel had passed away from old age the previous year. She did not suffer. Orla's rider wasn't the gentlest, but Orla was just happy to be performing. She was proud of her movement, but the rider pressed her higher. Orla reached for it, and promptly felt a staggering pain rip through her hind right leg. The leg collapsed unable to support her weight. She fell jaggedly to the ground and gave a heart-wrenching whinny of agony and fear. It turned out that one of the crowd had been a veterinarian who instantly ran onto the arena and diagnosed a ripped ligament. They carried her away, sedated. Her owner asked for Orla to be put to sleep, though the vet thought there was a good chance she could recover. They knew she would never be able to compete again and did not see a point in keeping her. The vet couldn't bear to see such a strong, glorious horse die for no reason. They made an agreement that the vet could keep Orla so long as she paid the bills for her treatment and recovery. Orla awoke to a gentle hand stroking her head. Her hind legs were numbed, but the lady at her head was soothing and she saw love in her eyes. She remembered her situation and wrenched her head away bending her head into to her chest in agony, not physical but emotional. She couldn't stand that she could never do dressage again.

Three months later...
Orla was standing in her cosy, if not huge stall. Her owner was a lovely woman, and Orla loved her to bits, but she just felt so numb. After all the pain and the mentally and physically exhausting recovery she could walk, trot, canter and be ridden again, but she couldn't perform dressgae moves. She was depressed. Her cold thoughts were disturbed one afternoon by a young voice. "What was this?" thought Orla. A little human walked in, cheery and bouncy. Orla forgot her agonising numbness when the girl offered her a sugar cube and stayed stroking her for a while. Orla felt a strong connection to this bubbly kid, and was sad to see her leave. The next day the girl returned with polo mints this time, and her owner appeared too with the grooming set. Her owner showed with guiding hands how to correctly brush Orla's coat, comb out her mane and tail and pick her hooves. It wasn't the same as getting ready for a show, but in many ways it was better. When the child left Orla nuzzled her and acted quite playful, nudging her and revelling in the girl's giggles. She felt better than she had since before the accident, maybe better than she had ever felt. Orla now had something to look forward to every day and it wasn't long before she was carrying the young girl around the arena, prancing about just like she had in the top competitions, but having a lot more fun with a truly adoring rider.
