Weekly Challenge Story 1

Postby ImogenEquine » Mon Jul 13, 2015 11:16 am

My mare, Confetti, really loves her bridle charm.

The small charm is a shiny rose quartz point held in place by a thin band of silver coloured metal. It has a small charm of two interlocking heart shaped that is attached to the top. When she saw it, the mare really liked the ideas that the charm meant, as certain gemstones often are supposed to represent different things, supposed to heal different things, or to supposed to ward of certain things. Rose quartz, which is also known as 'love stone', 'pink quartz', and 'bohemian ruby', has it's own set of ideas and traits based around it. The key word that has to do with the meaning of the beautiful translucent pink stone is none other than 'love'. The stories out there suggest that it means all love, including everything on the extremely broad spectrum of types of love, from love of yourself (as it is also known for raising self esteem and self worth), to love of your family, to romantic love. The lovely pink stone is said to get the owner rid of fear (as the stone promotes emotional healing like that), which is the reason she decided that she loved it so much in the first place.

Her owner went and bought this rose quartz point charm from one of the small pop up tack stores that typically open up around the show grounds at larger horse shows, and clipped it on her bridle right before their very first class of the day, in hopes that her nervous horse would perhaps find confidence in herself and stop fearing about not winning a high placing in the class, for after all, competing should be something that you think is fun, not something that makes you extremely worried and nervous. When the charm was placed on her bridle, Confetti noticed that her owner looked extremely proud and happy to be there with her. She knew that it really did take a lot of work to get to such a big show, and nothing was more important than the bond between a horse and their rider. Together, they walked up to the entrance to the ring and waited patiently to begin the course. Next in the right is Imogen on her mare, Birthday Cake!, the announcer called. With a bit of new found confidence, Confetti (also known as Birthday Cake, which is her show name) trotted into the arena, picking up her hooves high, and preparing to canter. Soon they were cantering along to the first jump, the mare taking long, graceful strides. The horse and rider cleared the first jump, which was three and a half foot tall fence, easily, the mare not even close to touching the very top pole. As they continued to complete the hunter course with impressive speed and elegance, the crowd began to applaud after every completed jump. By the time they cleared the final jump, the crowd was cheering as their try at the course had been a clear round, with no points deducted whatsoever. Confetti snorted loudly with a confident attitude, shaking her head while walking out of the arena, causing her rider to laugh and pat her neck saying Good girl Confetti! When all the riders were about to be called to trot in to be awarded ribbons, the horse and rider were pushed ahead to the very front of the line in front of all the others to their disbelief, in quite a hurry, right before everyone began to enter the arena with their horses' reins in hand. Still quite confused at how they had managed to place higher than some of the other riders who had courses that appeared to be much nicer and much more well done than their own round, the two of them headed into the arena, a huge smile that would be impossible to remove on the owner's face. Confetti trotted calmly next to her owner in an attempt to not exceed the speed of her jogging too much, and slowed down to a walk before they approached the people with all of the ribbons and the prizes. As the two of them halted beside the people, Confetti pawed the ground slightly, unable to contain her excitement, as she really did love to win. Everyone laughed as the young mare stretched her neck out to touch the brightly coloured rosettes that were fluttering in the wind with the tip of her nose, and jumped back quickly, startled, as one of them flipped upwards and tapped her muzzle. Gratefully accepting the large, shiny red ribbon with the show details printed on it in a gold cursive design, and a bag full of prizes, she smiled and waved for the photographer. Confetti watched all this feeling quite pleased with herself to have brought this much happiness to her owner that she loved dearly. When they returned to the stall that they had been given to use at the show, the mare was untacked right away. She watched as her owner hung the bridle up on the door's handle, noticing the rose quartz point charm that dangled from the side of one of the buckles, as it reflected the sunlight that was shining in through the barn's large windows. The cremello pintaloosa's owner pulled a bag of small muffin-like horse treats made with lots of shredded carrots and chunks of fresh red delicious apples, cut I to small chunks, topped with a glaze of glossy, dark, sweet, sticky molasses and sprinkled with a handful of oats. After she had undone the twist tie that held the bag closed to seal in the freshness, she offered one to the eagerly waiting mare, who had her eyes on the bag for half of the long walk from the arena to the show ground stalls. Looking back to the charm while munching on the soft and chewy snack, she then began to wonder if the dainty little bridle charm had really given her all of the good luck that she had throughout the entire day, but she realized something that made a big difference in the way she saw things soon after. The charm hadn't been truly as lucky as she had originally believed that it was earlier on in the day. It had quite simply given her a bit more confidence in herself, and that was really all she needed to do as well as she did that day.

Ever since that day, the rose quartz point charm was clipped on to her bridle right before each and every single show that she and her owner, Imogen went to compete in. When people would see it there, they would tend to ask her about the tiny translucent pink gemstone, for example many people have asked where it was purchased, It always reminded the mare of that one day and how she learned that it only took self confidence to achieve even her biggest goals and aspirations.

Mind you, when the mare had received the charm, it had simply been just the rose quartz charm without the hearts added. Her owner always wore a small silver necklace with a pendant of two interlocking hearts. She wore this as a symbol of all types of love, and she wanted to show her support of some of her best friends that had other sexualities. While she was getting Confetti all ready for the show that was the very next day, she was in quite a rush because she only had a small time frame in which Confetti needed to be bathed and her mane and tail also needed to be washed and untangled so that she could braid it later on in the day. If you own a light coloured horse, you already definitely know how difficult they can be to keep clean, so the mare's owner got to work immediately, scrubbing away at some of the stains that dotted the sides of the cremello pintaloosa mare's body. In her rush, the chain holding that pendant with two hearts snapped and fell to the floor and began to slide towards the drain, pushed by all the soapy water that was flowing into it. Luckily, her owner was able to reach out and grab on to it just in time, before it was swept away and carried down the drain, where it would have been lost forever. No longer having a chain for the necklace (as she could not keep the completely broken one), she decided to slip the charm into her pocket. After this, she finished bathing the horse, just managing to remove all of the stains and dirt, some of which required intense scrubbing which was causing her arms to ache slightly. She walked the mare back to her stall and left to grab her tack and clean it in preparation for the following day's show. The mare watched as she hung the mare's fancy, shiny black leather bridle on a hook that was on her stall door and set the saddle down on to the saddle rack, which sat in the hallway formed by two rows of stalls. The small piece of light-pink coloured quartz reflected the sunlight on to the walls, causing the stone itself to appear to sparkly as the beams of light made it flash. She contently watched the charm reflecting the beams of sunlight everywhere, while standing quietly in her stall, not minding the fact that hadn't been used in any lessons that day and her owner hadn't been on her all day. As she continued to lazily stare at it, she started to almost fall asleep, with her eyelids flickering shut every few seconds and her lip drooping slightly. While Confetti relaxed in her stall, her owner still had a lot of preparation to do for the show. She began to clean her tack, using a huge tub of sweet-smelling tack soap and a fresh new sponge. As she continued to work the product in, the black saddle started to shine once again. She did this in complete silence, other than the soft scraping of hooves as the horses moved around in their stalls and the soft munching sound from the horses who were still eating their hay from earlier in the morning. While she did this, she began to think about possible meanings of the charm that still remained in the pocket of her breeches. After awhile, one of her favourite ideas that she had thought of was 'same love'. Marriage equality and just equality for the LGBTQ+ community was an important thing to her. She had thought about how her lovely mare Confetti was a foal from two stallions. While thinking of this, she decided that maybe the charm should go on her mare's bridle. Taking Confetti's show bridle off the hook it was on, she pulled the small silver charm out of her pocket. Using her own nails and a pair of pliers that were in the barn's small tool kit, she managed to open the jump ring of the charm and attached that to the rose quartz charm that was already clipped on to the mare's show bridle. The mare's owner repositioned the jump ring's edges so that they fit beside each other once more, and put the bridle back.

After all this time, the little rose quartz point became more than a 'good luck charm' could ever be. Maybe there was something lucky about it, but the meaning behind it was the most important thing about the bridle charm. To the mare and her owner alike, the charm meant self confidence, undying love for each other, and the acceptance of everyone's love around them. At every show, during every show season that the mare and her owner participated in, Confetti wore this bridle, adorned with this charm, and never failed to succeed, always placing high in at least one of the classes. Since they had each other, they were both the true winners forever.
