I had first spot her few days ago in a little berry bush, her beautiful fur splotched with the red and purple juices of the berries. Her wide blue eyes were dull in sadness, with her eyebrows arched down. Her little lip was curled outwards, as if she was scared or shy, her little nose poked out from a bundle of leaves, and her ears-- her ears? I don't remember seeing her ears. They were hidden behind the thick brush of the bush but something about her face showed that she had not intended for anyone to see her ears in the first place. She stayed in the bush, day after day, she sat there, staring at the wolves that passed by, not moving or showing her ears. It was only today, that I decided to go see this little wolf and discover the secret hanging from her head that she was hiding so carefully and persistently.
The small bundle of fur cowered in the corner and her paws squeezed at her ears, desperately trying to hide them. Her eyes were shut in embarrassment and she looked like she was about to burst out crying at any second. Her ears. Her ears... they were huge and they hung down to her feet, so long and large that she could easily trip over them.
"D-don't l-look at them. L-look aw-way," she stuttered in her soft, quiet voice. "S-stop! D-don't look at them!" she continued, vigorously grabbing at her ears, an attempt to hide them.
"What's wrong? About your ears.. I mean"
"Y-you can s-s-see whats w-wrong"
"No... I cant"
"T-they're h-horrific!!!" she shrieked, her usually high-pitched and quiet voice cracking as she rose her voice.
I gaped at her for a few minutes. Suddenly, something struck in me. Disappointment? Empathy? Sympathy? ...Anger?
"What's wrong with you!" I yelled back. She flinched and shrunk even lower. I wasn't very tall in the first place but she was tiny compared to me, and I towered over her. "Your ears are fine! Your ears are nothing compared to others' problems and you.. you... you just sit there in that bush and hide like a coward?!"
The little bundle stared at me with blank, watery eyes. Realizing that I may have been too harsh, I lowered my voice.
"Not everyone is perfect and everyone has flaws, but you have to learn to accept those flaws because, well, those flaws are what make you... you," I explained to her. She gazed back with dull, confused eyes. "Um... here. Pinocchio. He had a peculiar nose, right? Well, in the end, he learned to accept the truth even before he turned into a boy. And... Dumbo! He had huge ears like yours but even if yours can't glide in the air and fly, yours are still unique and you can learn to love them. Turn them into something wonderful."
"But t-they're m-monstrous!" she blurted out.
"Elsa from Frozen. She claimed that her powers were monstrous, but look at her now. Her powers are absolutely beautiful, aren't they? Take even me for instance; look at me. I'm a mess and you know it --"
"N-no no! Y-you're r-really p-pretty!!"
"Haha thank you, but the same goes for you. My glowing eyes, dark eye whites, piercings in my ears, strange paint... if you're monstrous, then what am I? The devil himself??" I replied with a smile as I walked up to her and poked her ears. The little wolf giggled and smiled weakly. For the first time, her eyes seemed like full moons instead of new moons, like yin instead of yang, and they shone brightly like stars.
"S-so you r-really t-think my ears l-look o-okay?"
"Oh no. No, no, no, no, I don't think your ears look okay. Definitely not." The little RPW frowned a bit and her ears drooped. '
I gave her a sweet smile, and removed her paws from her ears. I told her to close her eyes while I went outside and grabbed a few radiant daisies, dancing in the May sunlight, and came back. "Open your eyes now and stare in this puddle."
Her large eyes fluttered open and they widened in pleasant surprise. They began to sparkle in joy and confusion. I had placed a few flowers near her ears and she looked like a daisy herself.
"What's your name?"
"Um... I-I don't know anymore. People have been calling me Ugly-Ears for as long as I remember."
"Good. Well, now your name is Winifred Mae Smithers. Winifred, meaning "joyful and peaceful friend" and Mae, "meaning the fifth month", the month that daisies bloom beautifully, like how you bloomed today."
The little RPW glanced at her paws, then her ears, and then at me. "So.. my ears...?"
"Winnie, your ears look beautiful and you're an automatic winner for 'best ears'. Winnie the winner; that's you."
Basically, Connie (a relatable wolf since she was recognized as a "monster" her whole life because of her strange features) helps explain to her that everything has flaws and anything can be made beautiful <3
