The owners of her mother and father had been anticipating a colt, so when a filly was born the decided to remember that she was female by attaching a pink ribbon. After that Sandy grew into the ribbon and decided to never take it off. It brought good luck and every time she wore the ribbon to a competition she never got a placing less than 3rd.

Origin of Ribbon;; Sooty was a rescue, she was adopted by a lovely family with a young girl. The child took the ribbon from her hair and tied it to Sooty's mane while the wife said, "welcome to our family". She and the child formed a close bond and are nearly inseparable now. Sooty has become an inseparable member of their family and a valuable in hand show mare.
