In early February, 2015, a new mutation of Maple Island Pony colouration was discovered. This new gene at first appeared to be a form of leopard complex, and was therefore called 'Peacock Appaloosa' for its resemblance to the bird of the same name and its spotted pattern; genetic testing has since proven that this is not the case. The peacock appaloosa gene does, however, override leopard complex genes, which may indicate that the two genes are located on the same chromosome. The peacock appaloosa gene, sometimes simply called the peacock gene, is now known to be partially dominant; heterozygous will show white spotting in peacock feather patterns (white outline, faint white inlaid with a white spot inside), homozygous will also show facial markings and colourful roaning over the neck and sometimes the rump, with the roan being more extensive on males. It is thought by researchers that this new mutation was developed as a method of attracting potential mating partners, as the bright colours and patterns will make individuals carrying this gene more noticeable to others of their kind

Ideal Valentine: Bastian met his ideal Valentine last year. Most of his life he had been a loner wondering around the islands. Although he would keep mostly to himself he would often watch others from afar, always too shy to get close to anyone. He has always enjoyed the quiet and peace of solitude; but the longer he was alone, the lonelier he became. Despite his longing for friends he just couldn't bring himself to join the other ponies. And they had become so accustomed to seeing him from a distance that they too were unwilling to close the gap. One day, around this time of year Bastian was resting by a pond. As he watched his reflection ripple in the murky water under an equally gloomy sky he couldn't help but feel very down. That's when he saw Breeze's charming little face peaking at his sad reflection over his shoulder. When he raised his head to meet her gaze she chirped a happy greeting and fluttered down from the branch where she had been perched. He had seen many birds in his life, but none had ever paid him any heed before. He watched and listened as she hopped around next to him singing a merry tune that instantly raised his spirits. She was very pleased when she saw how much he enjoyed her company for she had been lonely too. Ever since then they have been inseparable. Now a days she rides around on his back brightening his life with her friendship. And although he still doesn't mingle with other ponies he is much happier than he's ever been.
P.S. Breeze is a Chickadee.
