This is my first attempt at a humorous story- enjoy
I sit here and howl miserably. This has been the worst night of my life- wait – scratch that, this has been the worst Halloween night of my life. A small part of this may have just been that I, was thrown out, was photo bombed by a ghost, went to the slammer for a while, got and lost a girlfriend, all in a period of 3 hours. You wonder how this all could possibly happen? Well I’ll tell you:
It was a dark and stormy night- no seriously. But before the “dark” part happened, it was about dinner time, when my best pal Hearth and I decided to go find a cool place to get a selfie in our costumes together.
“It’s getting dark, Cinder- do you think we’ll make it back before our person goes out trick or treating?” Hearth said, while he looked at me from beneath his costume, which actually wasn’t much different from his normal self, the only Halloween costume he wore was a brown jacket. I know- exciting right? “Eh, we’ll make it.” I said, being my optimistic self. “If we don’t get lost first.” I sneezed. Rolling in fire-place ashes to make myself look like a ghost was a tricky business. “I think I’ll go as something else next year.” I thought half aloud.

Me: “What are you supposed to be again?” I asked as we walked past some store fronts.
Hearth: “I couldn’t decide between dressings up as the element of fire, because my fur is orange, or a pumpkin- so kinda both. I just threw on a jacket I found lying around and-”
Me: “Hey! You mean you borrowed our persons Jacket!?”
Hearth: “Yeah, so?”
Me: oy. that explains the lace at the bottom. She’s not going to be too happy when she notices it’s missing.”
Hearth ignored my wise words, and rolled his eyes. As he looked away, he yelled an exclamation “Hey! There’s just the spot!” “Spot?” “Yeah, Cinder, you know- the selfie spot?” He responded. I glanced over to see what he was talking about, and saw a small misty graveyard. “That place?” I asked warily, “Yes! And why not?” “It’s getting dark and, you know.” “You watch too much TV.” He said accusingly. “Well at least I watch good programs, and not geeky stuff like national geographic and Lord Of The Wedding Rings, or whatever.” I said, changing the subject, and trying to get him to argue about TV shows, when I noticed we were already inside. “We just take the photo, and get out.” I said nervously. “Fair enough” The pumpkin/fire Nektarine responded. He pulled out his Nokia phone out of the pocket of the stolen jacket, and we both flashed our teeth and posed. “Which one should I post?” He asked, as Hearth scrolled through the photos, then suddenly he stopped and pointed with a claw at a figure in the background of our last picture. “IT’S A GHOST!” I screamed, and began to run, when all of a sudden, it swooped down and tackled me! Well, actually a net did all the swooping and tackling- a dog catchers net.

“But we’re not even dogs!” I whined from behind the bars of the “Happy tails pet pound” kennels. Happy my tail! I thought, and as for Hearth, he doesn’t even have one (a tail I mean). A week ago I would have turned and blamed Hearth for this mess, but I’ve grown into the mature Nektarine since then, and not I wouldn’t even think of doing such a thing, instead I flung myself down on the cold hard concrete and began to whimper and whine. “Maybe if I annoy the guard enough, he’ll let us go!” I whispered to Hearth. “Not likely, and besides your annoying me too.” He turned away and resumed whatever he had been doing before. I wondered who he was talking to, and just then I saw- and wow! She was a medium sized Shetland sheepdog, who was in the next kennel over. I immediately butted into the conversation “What are you talking about, you have nice fur, what’s your name? Do you live around here?” instead of answering my questions, Hearth just turned to me and said “Oh hey Cinder, Shirley was just telling me that she may have a plan to escape.” I was really getting annoyed by that guy, so I left him and Shirley to talk about whatever, and went about to my own course of business. I howled loudly to get the attention of the jailer, or the dude who runs the pound, he was just sitting there, on his phone playing candy crush in a swivel-ey chair while I- em- we, were all cold and miserable. “Yo jailah-" I called, and howled again, tilting my head up so that he could see my collar.

The man looked to be in his mid-60s, he had a long white beard and obviously needed to lose some weight. Santa (as I will from here on refer to him) turned to me and looked like he was going to say something that would make even the elves cringe, when he stopped short. “SIMON! I thought you said these were strays!” he bellowed. A skinny, tall man who I recognized as our captor, hurried over from another room. “Y-yes sir, I found them in the graveyard by the old Baptist church just inside of town.” “Well, that one has a collar.” Santa shouted, pointing to me. I guess no one taught that guy to use an inside voice. All the commotion had brought Hearth over, and he stood next to me looking quizzically from me, to Santa, to Simon, he was visibly surprised at my brilliance. I would have paid all my candy for a photo of his face at that moment. ”S-Sorry sir, I must have missed seeing the collar under all of his fur.” Santa walked over to the kennel door. “When he opens it, let’s make a run for it.” I whispered to Hearth, glad to be in charge for once. “But what about Shirley?” He asked. Oh yeah, her. “We’ll rescue her once we’re out.” “I’ll check to see if the Grey one has tags.” Santa hollered. “The grey one?” I wanted to ask, “How about, The Hansom one, or the really athletic looking one?” Santa obviously does not have very good eyesight. But I didn’t have time to ask before the kennel door was unlatched, and flung open, and we were gone.

Once we were in the parking lot of the pound, I was panting loudly, “Santa sure runs fast!” I chuffed, Hearth looked at me like I was the crazy one of the group, but he didn’t say anything. We walked down behind the kennels to catch our breath.
“We could dig Shirley out.” I suggested, but of course my idea was rejected immediately by Hearth. “Nah, its concrete, there’s no way.” Hearth walked over to a kennel to take a look at the latches, “hmm. Looks like it’s not even locked. We could just stand on something and open it ourselves.” “That’s what I was going to suggest next.” I said sulkily. We quietly entered the pound through the open back door, and while Santa and Simon we’re still out looking for us, Hearth stood on top of me and slid back the latch. Of course he got to be the one who did all the heroics. The door swung open with a loud creaking sound, and Hearth toppled off my back and onto the floor. “Hey Shirley, now that you’re free, want to go trick or treating together?” I asked, “Actually no thanks,” she said in her thick dog accent, (which compared to human accents, sounds kinda Russian) “I have some other things to do.” I frowned, what other things could possibly be more important than going trick or treating with me?

We all walked outside through the back door. This is where the Dark and stormy part comes in. The sky crackled with lightening, and the wind whipped through our fur. “Well, see you later Shirley, I hope you find a family.” Hearth said. “How come he gets to talk to her more?” I thought, and pushed him aside. “Yeah, bye.” I said, then she turned and began to walk away, but Hearth stopped her “Why don’t you come with us for a little while? You could meet our person, and I’m sure she’d help you find a home!” Shirley appeared to think about this, but then agreed, “That would be very kind.”

The rain began to fall, slowly at first, then in sheets. “AWWWW!” I cried with frustration “What is it?” Hearth asked. “My costume is washing off!” it was true, the ashes were all running off my fur in streaks. “Now you could be a- um, raincloud?” Hearth suggested. I shook my head “That’s lame.” I said “How about a Zombie?” Said Shirley “YES! Perfect, thank you Shirley you’re a genius!” I exclaimed. Hearth just looked at me questioningly “You’re so confusing.” He muttered.

We wound around the neighborhood, and finally arrived at our house. The porch lights were on, but all the windows were dark. Is that a good sign? I thought. “I hate to say it, but it looks like she left without us…” Hearth said sadly. “How could she do that? She was going to bring us!” “Bring you where?” Shirley asked “We were only going trick or trunking tonight at the church, lots of candy, lots of fun- no big deal.” I said sarcastically. “Too bad. I’m sorry if I delayed you.” Shirley apologized. “We can wait for our person here under the porch, it’s better than waiting in the rain.” Hearth offered.

And this brings me to the present, you know, the part in the beginning where I howled in frustration- yup that just happened. So if you’re saying “Hey! Where’s the happy ending? Where’s the part where Cinder marries his true love and gets all the candy he could possibly want?” than sorry to disappoint you, because that hasn’t happened yet.

“Cinder, stop narrating everything! It’s getting on my nerves.” Hearth is saying to me, oh well, I suppose he doesn’t understand the trauma I’ve endured. I sit down and watch the cars and happy children running everywhere, there’s little Jacklyn taking lollipops from her brothers jack-o-lantern when he’s not looking, there’s the sound of cars driving by. There’s a person in a fluffy bunny costume running wildly towards us through the mist- wait what? “Look guys! It’s our person!” shouts Hearth with excitement in his voice. “Oh yeah, she was dressing up as the energizer bunny this year- I forgot.” I think to myself. “Oh my gosh! I’ve been looking everywhere for you crazy Nektarines!” “Who’s this?” she asks. Just now another girl runs up, (my owner’s friend Amy) with a 50’s costume on “What a cute dog, who’s is it?” she asks, referring to Shirley and just for the record, I agree with her. They look for a collar or some tags on Shirley, but can’t find any. “If she doesn’t have an owner, do you think I can keep her?” the 50’s girl asks “Yeah, probably Amy, there’s a lot of stray dogs around here, but you might check at the pound and see if anyone has been looking for a Shetland Sheepdog there.” “I know how that’ll end” I say with a smile to Hearth, who nods vigorously. “Now I get to see you all the time!” I bark happily.

I lay down in my comfy bed, with Hearth snoring -appropriately enough-on the fireplace and I think of my crazy day. The trunk or treat went well, my person hadn’t left without us after all, and she had actually been looking for us. We gave out candy and tracts from the back of my person’s car, and Shirley was there, and we had a few jolly-ranchers ourselves. Turns out it was the BEST Halloween night I’ve ever had in my whole life, just like I'd known it would be!

Well, anyway- the end!
