Dear Diary...
My new Ilu drum came today, and I'm in love! I plan on spending the next day or so getting used to playing it, at least. In Brazil they hold them under their arm and hit it with the opposite hand, but the drum looked a lot smaller online! I have to keep it on the floor in front of me, but balancing on my back legs and hitting it is hard work!
I decided that I wanted to show Darius - he was the one who taught me about Brazil in the first place, after all! Luckily the Ilu was pretty light, so getting it onto my back was the hardest part - walking was pretty easy after that. In Darius' apartment, he showed me a book about South America which had a section on culture. The music bit was super interesting! I wanted to bring it home, but he was halfway through the book and wanted to carry on reading. I think I convinced him to lend it to me afterwards though? But best of all was that he let me play it for him! I played really loud and sang a bit too, though I think it was just silly noises. Darius didn't join in, but whatever - I'm sure he enjoyed my mini-concert all the same! He even stopped some of his research he was doing to take a picture of me with the Ilu - I'll stick a copy in here.
I told Darius I wanted to play my drum outside, play it to all the birds and flowers. He said it might get e in trouble though, at least around his area. Apparently all his neighbours are sort of grumpy, which is a shame. I thought maybe some music would cheer them up, so this afternoon I took it outside the apartment block and started playing anyway. It was really fun to sit there and just play with the wind blowing through my hair. An old man even stood to watch for a while and gave me a bit of change! I now have $7.31 in my piggybank, I think. According to the internet, there's a word for going out and playing your instrument in public for money. I don't remember it now though. Bluking? Burding? Something beginning with B. But I might do it more often...I could get more money for more instruments! Maybe I'll remember the word in the morning. I's been a long day, after all! Tonight I'm going to dust off the Ilu before going to sleep, but I'd best do that now before I get too tired - goodnight!
