███the ocean is not sweet

███it is vast, it is salty, it stings your eyes

███you still lived with your adoptive mother in the tiny fishing town near the ocean. the sky, alight in all hues of orange and purple and love and memories began to show the youngest glimpses of stars emanating from the warm expanses of their home in the evening sky. the grass was tall enough to brush the hair out of your face, but traversing it would lead to a small, hidden cove. you sat on the cool sand alone.

███out of the foliage stepped a stranger, dressed in exotic fabrics and adornments, with a small, wooden, canvas-wrapped cart trailing behind them. you think they smiled under their hood. it took a moment, but the stranger began their way to you, trailing their cart behind them. they did not greet you, they did now introduce themselves, but they came up and sat down beside you. a few moments passed before they turned to you and began to search through their goods.

███"it's a beautiful day, but you don't look happy. here, have this."

███they handed you a cool, sea-colored ice pop before leisurely picking up on their voyage once again, leaving you, yet again, alone. You stare at the tall grass for a short moment, and then back at the sea when you can no longer hear the merchant rustling their way through the grass. The sky is a warm purple, the sun residing into the horizon. You taste the ice pop and it is a cool, salty, vanilla flavor, one unlike you've ever tried before. it was not sweet, but it reminds you of the water. It reminds you of your home. quiet. embracing.

███it's been so long since then. you've left your hometown, your adoptive mother, your name, your identity, all of that, behind. you have chosen the life of the nomad, you quest is to help those in need, even if it as simple as a visit while they are alone, or even a small, frozen treat. you've adopted a new name for yourself and keep your identity neutral. you are one with the elements, traveling the coasts of the ocean as far as you can carry yourself.

This name, Kai, had a very summery ring to it when I first stumbled across it as a Hawaiian name. I've researched it and come to find that it has many meanings in many different languages, meanings that reflect both her connections to summer and her personality. In some cultures it means "pier", "ocean", "shell", "food", "quay", or "safe harbor". In others the meaning better reflects her personality, like "strong", "unbreakable", "triumphant", and "loveable".

Kai is extremely fond of ice cream sandwiches; when I say "extremely", I mean it. I think it's become a bit of an addiction, but she loves them and who am I to intervene. Kai will viciously consume any type of ice cream sandwich she can get her paws on, whether it's the cookie kind, neapolitan, all chocolate, all vanilla, whatever, although the classic is her favorite. She's actually figured out how to make them herself, and is planning on starting a stand to sell all her variations of the dessert.
I bet by now you're wondering, "well what could cause this severe addiction to such a delicious snack?" Kai actually has low blood sugar. Yes, it's surprising, her being a sugary snack in herself, but she eats an ice cream sandwich when she feels her blood sugar begin to drop, for which symptoms include a lack of energy or shaky paws. One sandwich will normally boost her right back up to normal.
