Beginner's Training #2: First Time With Tack (This is a long story too with some irrelevant points... I'M SURRYYYY ;A;)
Sakura pulled the horribly heavy tack into the pen. "Hello, dear Laetus," she said warmly. Her dinosaur gave a deep rumble of welcome. She peered at his leg, and saw joyfully that the gash was now only a scar. Her relationship with Rosa, the Mat'junea's young healer, had grown greatly over the week- all the time it took for the woman to fix the terrible wound. Rosa had become like a second mother to Sakura as she worked tirelessly on the dinosaur. She constantly comforted her as Sakura had worried day and night about him.
The Mat'junea riders had gone back to the place where Sakura had found Laetus, and discovered a blood trail heading towards Mat'huen territory. Though the riders didn't know why the Mat'huen would do such a thing, they knew that they had attacked the Mat'junea by attacking its dinosaurs. They wanted vengeance, and by all means, Sakura would be there, tearing them to pie-
Laetus bumped her knee with his head, bringing her back from her distraction. Sakura jumped, then looked at him. “I’m softening up,” she muttered, disgusted, under her breath. How about a scan, she decided, to make herself feel better. She began to listen and watch. Noises battered her hears, but nothing making those noises were to be wary of. Shadows and reflections passed by her, but none of their creators were hostile.
“Okay, then,” she said lightly. She picked up the sadly, grunting, and managed to lift it to chest height. Laetus touched the leather curiously, sniffing. “My good boy,” she crooned. Sakura put it down and picked up the bridle, which Laetus showed just as much interest in. “This goes on your head,” she explained. “And this-“ she pointed at the bit- “goes in your mouth.”
Laetus looked at her, mortified. She laughed. “What a human you are,” she said with a grin. “You understand perfectly what I say, Laetus.” He snorted, with a “duh” look on his face. That served to make her laugh harder. “I’m going to use these things to ride you,” she told him after she could breathe again. His tail swished back and forth uncertainly. “You don’t trust me?” Sakura asked, hurt.
Laetus huffed, sighing, and lowered his head. His mouth grudgingly opened for the bit. Sakura patted his neck, then placed the bridle on his head and popped the bit in his mouth. Laetus straightened up immediately and roared. His mouth gaped, sticking his lower jaw out to the side. Laughter shook her body again. “Easy, Laetus, easy,” she gasped.
“Fiery beast you’ve got there,” a cool, amused voice startled her. Laetus paused mid-gape, giving him a comical look.
Sakura whirled around, catching sight of one of the royal boys, identifiable by the golden cape flowing from his shoulders.
"Oh!" she yelped, startled. Blushing furiously, she shook her head. "Laetus isn't fiery. This is a new experience for him."
The royal looked at the watching dinosaur curiously. "Laetus... hm," he scratched the back of his head. "Aren't you the boy that got attacked by the Mat'huen?" he crooned to her dinosaur.
Laetus bobbed his head, much to the royal's delight. "He understands human speech," he said with glee. "That's really rare!"
Sakura nearly dropped the saddle she'd just picked up. "Can't all dinosaurs understand us?" she asked, baffled.
The royal shook his head. "All can understand key words and certain phrases. Very, very few can actually hear and comprehend everything you say."
Sakura blinked once, twice, then shrugged. "Awesome. That'll make training easier. But I can't start training until I'm riding. And I can't start riding until I saddle Laetus up, can I?" she said, rubbing Laetus' neck as she balanced the saddle between her remaining arm and her knee.
"Go ahead," he said. He leaned forward, resting on the fence.
Sakura looked up at the forbiddingly high back. "Umm... Laetus? Can you come down a bit?" she asked awkwardy.
If dinosaurs could groan, Laetus did. His legs bent, and his arms touched the ground. His tail lashed with annoyance.
"Thanks, boy," she said warmly. Slowly, she eased the saddle onto his back. She quickly fastened the strapped. Laetus got up immediately, glaring at Sakura. Seriously? his eyes told her. "Is everything comfortable?" she asked him.
His head snaked around, bumping the leather with his head experimentally. Laetus' eyes turned back to Sakura's. Fine, if you get past the feeling of being squeezed in half. She started a bit, surprised at how easily she understood his expression. But then she smiled. "Now to riding."
