Hi, I'm Cobweb. I have been skulking around Serenity Shelter, waiting for the perfect dog to arrive. What I wanted was a long-haired dachshund, and this lovely girl is just
perfect.
Biscuit. You might be thinking, why such a simple name? Well, biscuit actually means 'cookie' in French. I wanted to name this girl 'cookie' in other languages but when I translated cookie to French, I found the name I wanted and loved.
Biscuit's a girl.
The slick pebbles in the backyard of my humans' house hurt my already injured paws as I ran, sodden in the pouring rain. I ran aimlessly, just trying to get away from one thing - the stupid human child, Alinde, who insisted on playing with me.
She bullied me twice as much as she played with me. In fact, I could not think of a time when I was not hurt during playtime.
I slipped on the pebbles again, crashing into a withering bush, and panicked as I heard Alinde's laughter, triumphant and mocking. "Aww! Poor doggy can't even run?" She was close, just a few feet behind me, and I could hear her thumping footsteps, squelching ever so often.
I decided to just stay put in the bush. After all, I had absolutely no chance of outrunning Alinde. With my heavy, wet fur and injuries, I was as slow as a snail. I watched, my eyes searing with anger (and rainwater) as Alinde came, smirking. "Good doggy. Let's get Mom to bathe you first, then..." Her lips curved up in a cruel smile. I shuddered, partly from dread. Alinde brushed her soaked hair, scattering water droplets. "Then let's go play!"

I indulged in the moments of splashing about in the bathtub, letting the lukewarm, soapy water cleanse off the dirt and the rainwater. The soap stung my cuts but I ignored it. The Mistress would get it cared for.
"PLAYTIME!" boomed Alinde, scooping me up in her arms before I could yelp. Her fingers dug into my skin and I flinched. Setting me down onto the floor of the guest bedroom which had chew toys, rubber balls and squeaky bones scattered all over it, Alinde tossed me onto the floor as if I were a frisbee and my wounds flared with pain.
The guest bedroom was both my heaven and my hell.
Alinde fished out a small rubber ball that was striped in blue and and announced, grinning, "We're gonna play ball!" Dread welled up in the pit of my stomach.
Spots erupted before my eyes and agony struck my head as the ball ricocheted off my stomach. She laughed, the golden sound bubbling with joy, and as she grabbed me by the tail, I scrabbled frantically about. It was useless; the wood floor was too smooth.
Anger suddenly built up in a wave as Alinde tugged my tail.
I'll show you what's pain like, I thought fiercely, and lunged towards her, canines bared. My teeth raked across her face, and as she screamed in agony, I used her ruined face as a launchpad, springing off and landing quite close to the door. "MOMMY! MOMMY!" Alinde screamed, her hands clutching at her face, scarlet with blood.

I should have expected it. My human family moved houses to somewhere called Texas, and left me here alone, in the backyard. It had been two weeks; I caught the rats and vermin and ate them with much reluctance. How I missed the sweet-saltiness of the dog kibble! The rain was pouring down in buckets today, and I took cover in a wilting bush again, paws caked with mud. It reminded me of the fateful day I attacked Alinde, and I shuddered when I recalled the rusty taste of human blood in my mouth -
There was the sound of tyres screeching to a halt. I squinted through the gray, bleak, landscape of rain but saw only a white human contraption, the one that ran about on tyres.
"There's a dog abandoned here. A dachshund. The neighbors reported it, saying that it caught rats to eat." The sound of a door slamming alerted me of the humans' presence.
Hope flooded me with warmth.
