Shortstory:
Moni loves to go on adventures and when she was one she went on her best ever!
"But mommy I want to help!" Moni cried when her mother wouldn't let her come hunting.
"No baby. It's to dangerous for you yet. You'll understand when your older." And with that she left to bring in today's meal. Moni's head dropped in despair. She wanted more than anything to go hunting, and her mother had always said no.
When will it be my turn? She thought. She sulked around the nest the rest of the day, her mother frequently going back and forth to the deer she had caught when they got hungry. The next day the deer was gone. It was time to go hunting again, and this time Moni was going with- whether anyone else knew or not. She asked her mother once again but she just got the same answer. No. Though she wasn't as discouraged this time. She had a plan. She watched her mother leave, and as soon as she was completely out of sight her plan was set in motion. She wriggled her way out of the dense thicket where her mother had chosen to nest and followed her mother's scent trail until she smelled prey. She found one pretty quickly, in fact. It was the top season for hunting and the prey was plentiful. She sniffed a few extra times to make sure she had actually found something. She had. She didn't know what this kind of prey was, but she knew it had to be big, the smell was far too pungent to be small. She followed the trail until she was only a few yards away from a huge cave. It was settled in a clearing with trees surrounding it, hiding it from prying eyes. And something was sleeping inside. She was about to move out of the bushes when the bushes on the other side of the clearing the bushes shook and separated to reveal two black animals with small ears and big heads and they were both solid black. They looked friendly enough as they started to play with each other, so Moni crept slowly out of the bushes. Then she stepped on a twig.
SNAP, it went and instantly the black creatures froze. Their heads whirled around to see Moni stepping toward them and they fled to the cave entrance, bawling loudly into the cave.
Everything was quiet, like the calm before the storm. And then came the storm. A loud noise that was half-way between a growl and a yell sounded from the cave. Then, out stepped the biggest creature she had ever seen. It looked almost exactly like the small black ones, but this one was much bigger, by at least three times. It raised it's massive head to sniff the air and snapped its head toward Moni and it singled her out. In a terrifying bellow the creature lurched toward her and dazzling speed. Moni closed her eyes and turned her head, waiting for it to hit her. But it never did. Right before the beast was about to reach her, and bushes opened again and her mother crashed through, her teeth barred. She positioned herself in front of Moni and snarled intimidatingly. The black beast took notice of this and paused, wondering if the small meal was worth a fight. She resolved not, and with a grumble and a shake of it's great head, it turned and walked back into the cave.
When the creature was out of sight Moni's mother whirled around, anger in her eyes. She welled up, getting ready to give Moni a harsh scolding. Moni just looked down in shame, she already knew this was a stupid thing to do and that the beast could have killed her. She looked up again but this time, the only thing in her mother's eyes was relief. Moni hadn't realized how scared she had made her mother, and now the only thing she wanted to do was bring her back to the safety of the nest.
As they walked back, her mother told her all about the animal she had seen and that she hadn't attacked because she was just protecting her babies too. Her mother also described how worried she had been when she had found that Moni was not in the nest, and reveled how all mothers had the same job. Moni just listened, to everything. Her mother obviously knew more than she did, and she made it her job to listen to every word her mother said. And maybe one day, she would be doing the same for her own child.
In honor of all mothers and what they do for us!!
