Username: Bones ♥ Name of deerssert: Baridi Gender: Female Winter image or gif:
One extra:
Baridi happily runs through the snow. All of her friends were bundled up inside, staying out of the cold. But hey, who needs friends when you've got winter? The little deer prances on, tossing her head like a buck, feeling proud in her brand-new coat. It looks almost good enough to eat! Actually, several birds have tried. Baridi continues her journey through the snow-covered land, leaving her decorated home far behind as she ventures into the woods.
She looks around nervously, jumping at every slight noise. Maybe this wasn't such a good idea. Baridi hears a low growling sound, then a high-pitched but muffled yelp. A monster! It must be coming after her next! Baridi squeaks in fear and scrambles around, trying to get her footing. The monster's roar is getting closer! The little deer runs into a section of forest with thick trees, hoping the monster can't follow her. But, as she races through the densely-packed trees, her coat gets caught on a branch and is pulled right off! Baridi skids to a halt to retrieve it but the monster's muffled footsteps make her start running again.
Panicked, Baridi dives behind a pile of snow. The full reality of what just happened hits her and she feels her lower lip trembling. Mama will be so sad that she lost her new coat! The little deer sits down, staring at her hooves. What a rotten day. Baridi squeezes her eyes shut, trying not to cry. She hears the monster's footsteps again but doesn't bother moving. A tear runs down her face. The monster comes around the snow. Baridi opens her eyes to see not a six-nosed monster, not a seven foot giant bat, but--a fox? The little fox looks at the small deer. "I heard your shriek and wondered if you were okay," it says meekly, shuffling its paws. Baridi smiles. "I'm okay. I thought I heard a monster!" The fox's eyes go wide. "A monster?" it exclaims, crouching down in the snow. "Yes! I heard it growl and its prey yelp!" Baridi says. The fox sheepishly sits up. "That was me," it says quietly. "I was trying to hunt but I fell on my face. In front of Callie, too!" Baridi sympathetically nuzzles the fox on the head. "I'm sure you're a fine hunter, uh," she breaks off, not knowing his name. "I'm Cody," the fox says. "I'm Baridi," the deer replies. The two animals happily sit in silence for a moment.
"You were trying to hunt?" Baridi finally says. Cody nods. "I'm not very good," he admits. "How do you hunt, anyways?" the little deer asks curiously. The fox stands up. "I'll show you," Cody offers, crouching. He sniffs the air for a second, then leaps up and pounces not-so-gracefully into the snow. He lands flat on his face. Baridi resists the urge to laugh. Embarrassed, the fox sits up, snow dusted on his muzzle and face. "Maybe you should try not flapping your tail around when you jump," Baridi suggests, her coat temporarily forgotten. Cody shrugs and performs the move again. This time, he lands on his paws. Triumphantly, he runs back over to Baridi. "I did it!" he exclaims. Baridi happily hugs her new friend, then sadness paints her face again.
"What's wrong?" Cody asks, worried. Baridi shuffles her front hooves. "I lost my coat," she says. Cody looks down at his paws. "Oh. I'm sorry. Do you want me to help you look for it?" he offers. Baridi brightens and nods. The pair retrace Baridi's steps, only to find the coat gone! Baridi sadly slumps down into the snow. "We'll never find it,"she says dejectedly. "My mom will be so upset. I can't ever go home!" Cody sadly shuffles his paws, then brightens. "You could come live with me and my family!" he exclaims. "We have a nice warren. You'll like it." Baridi smiles and nods. The two trot together to Cody's home.
A small cluster of foxes awaits them. One runs to Cody as he and Baridi emerge from the trees. "Where were you?" she says, fretting over her son. Cody fends the vixen off. "Mom, I'm fine! This is Baridi, my friend," Cody says. "Can she stay with us?" Baridi nods hopefully. The fox shakes her head. "I'm sure Baridi's mum wouldn't like that," she says. The friends sigh. Then, five little robins come swooping in, carrying Baridi's coat! "Hey! That's mine!" Baridi exclaims, running over to the birds. She dusts some snow off of it. "How did you get it?" she asks. "Our family runs the market here," Cody says. Looking around, Baridi notices other foxes milling about, stopping at different warrens and trading. Cody's mother, Carrie, nods. "Did you rescue her?" another pup runs over. Cody puffs out his chest. "I sure did, Callie!" Baridi nods. Callie's eyes widen. "You're so brave, Cody!" The male pup chuckles, embarrassed. "Yeah," he says. "Cody, take Baridi home, will you?" Carrie asks. Cody nods. Baridi puts on her coat.
"Why, I can see my house from here!" she exclaims, taking off at a run. The fox pup catches up with her. Together the race down the slope, arriving at the deer's home in no time. Baridi's mom runs out of the house when she sees her daughter. "Baridi! Thank goodness you're safe!" she says, nuzzling her. She invites Cody in for hot chocolate. The two tell the tale of their adventures, including hunting lessons, monsters, and just a little bit of luck.
