Dead space, a desperate phone call, the same heartbreakingly familiar pre-recorded message.
The ritual was the same every day since then... and still she had no way of knowing where the lost ends were, if she could ever make ends meet again.
Day 365: Soft lips by the receiver. A defeated whisper across static. A wish for shared moments long gone.
“It’s been a year now...” A pause. The inevitable tears. It hurt now more than ever. “I’m still so God awfully sorry. I don’t know where you are... if you are...” Another pause. A resolved sigh. ”But I’m healing now.” She chokes back tears, emitting a raspy laugh, the first since then. ”And I hope that you’re happy out there love, ‘cause I’m gonna be happy too.”
Static. A click. The end.
Today was everything, where it started and where it would end. Arlo was tired of mourning, of guessing... Today? She would love herself, learn to grow and to live. No one else could hold her back any longer. It was time to move on.

there's something of a finality to death, they thought, looking at the freshly turned dirt beneath them.

with an argument, you can apologize. with distance, there are always letters. but even for the little things, it was hard to fully grasp that gone was gone. they hadn't thought much to even acknowledge the existence of their pet, having grown so accustomed to her presence, and it hurt. it hurt to know they hadn't appreciated her more while she was here, now that they were staring down at the bird's grave knowing that she was gone.

even though she was merely a sparrow, did she know how much ji cared about her?

in that notebook they had set aside long ago, not knowing what to fill it with, they began to write down all the things they wished they had said and done before she was gone.

300 word story; it’s always tough losing anyone, everyone knows that.
nobody expects it to hurt as much as it does, nor can you imagine the impact their death will give.
saria knew everyone didn’t see her hurting important as it was, after all it was “only a rabbit”, as she'd be told by countless others who saw her grieving.
why couldn’t they understand?
to her, bella was her world, and any loss no matter how big or small should be respected.
bella, not just a pet to her but a best friend.
she did everything with her. on her first day of school saria was so nervous that she tried to smuggle bella in with her, but her mum noticed and took bella home, but it was alright, her nerves had been eased.
when she got picked up that day bella and her mum were waiting for her.
bella was a lifeline for her, a constant in her life. she was there through her first kiss, her first date and her first breakup, always providing comfort and love no matter what.
how can something so simple as nature rip that way, and why does it hurt so much?
bella lived to be an amazing 9 years old, but it still wasn’t enough. there were still so many missed opportunities, and there's always more, there's always that little bit more time you should've spent together or that little bit more you should have said.
in the days after bella died, saria was very to herself. she cried a lot, but then her sadness warped into productivity, resulting in a shoddily stitched handmade plushie of bella. it wasn't well done, but it's the thought that counts.
now, whenever saria is sad, she spends time with the plushie, knowing that bella is watching over her.

300 word story; Everett was just a small baby when her parents died from a disease. She was an orphan until 2 wonderful owners got her. But they died too. She went on a long lasting trip to find true owners but all she found was sadness in her heart. She was hungry and cold. Nobody wanted her but the angels came for her and brough her to heaven. She is in heaven protecting all the people in heaven. She was happy but still broken in her heart. She walked in heaven and she heard a sweet little child calling her. She ran to him and he was about to fall down to earth, she caught and she fell into Earth. Her life was going to be gone but she managed to fly. She was a goddess pet because she saved someone. The child ran to her and cried happily. She was known as the brave Everett and many people wanted her as her pet but only the sweet little child got her.
