What are the Antaleks?
In simplest terms, the Antaleks [pronounced: ant:ah:leks] are considered to be cousins of the Daleks; an extraterrestrial race of mutant cyborgs from the planet Skaro. However, the two species are almost complete opposites in many ways.
In the Doctor Who episode "Daleks in Manhatten", Daleks attempted to evolve. One Dalek from the Cult of Skaro states that "the children of Skaro must fork again." This is a reference to the Antaleks. [Unofficial note: This is a real quote, but the reference was not to the Antaleks; I just chose it to seem clever.]
How do Antaleks differ from Daleks?
Daleks and Antaleks are almost completely opposite in ways of personality. The Daleks are a powerful race bent on universal conquest and domination, utterly without pity, compassion or remorse. Various legends portray them as having had every emotion removed except for hate, leaving them with a desire to purge the entire universe of all non-Dalek life. Antaleks however, have every emotion except for hate. [Torchwood note: Antaleks still may express dislike, anger, fear, and passive aggression.] Regardless, Antaleks are still just as powerful and intelligent as their Dalek cousins, though Antaleks are definably more temperate.
How did Antaleks originate?
During the final years of a thousand-year war against the Thals, the scientist Davros created and genetically engineered Kaled mutants integrated within a tank-like or robot-like mechanical shell. Most of these creatures are known as the Daleks. However, one ‘batch’ was disturbed during a particularly important phase of their creation: the purging of all emotions except for hate. These beings came to be called Antaleks.
How did the Antaleks come to Earth?
Because the base code of their DNA still registers as Dalek, Davros permitted these ‘mistakes’ to live. He banished them from Skaro and the entire ‘Whoniverse’. While details of their exact journey to our universe are few and far between, there is one constant variable that all the Antaleks confirm seeing near their ship: a blue box.
What do Antalek Casings look like?
They normally resemble human-sized salt and pepper shakers with a single mechanical eye-stalk mounted on a rotating dome, a gun mount containing an energy weapon (or “death ray”) and a telescopic manipulator arm which is usually tipped by an appendage resembling a sink plunger (may be either a flame thrower, sensor, claw, or suction cup). Antalek casings are made of a bonded polycarbide material called “dalekanium”. The lower half of an Antalek's shell is covered with hemispherical protrusions, or “Dalek bumps”. These are part of a sensory array and also serve a function in the self-destruct mechanism. Antalek armor lacks the force field (used for the evaporating of most bullets and resists most types of energy weapon) that Daleks have. [Torchwood note: Antaleks used to have force fields, but gave up installing them when it became apparent that we (as in, the people that Antaleks have interactions with thus far) served them little threat.] They have a very limited field of vision, with no peripheral sight at all. Antaleks still have their full and operational weapons systems, but rarely have been noted using them for questionable purposes. Their weapons fire a beam that has electrical tendencies, and may be a form of plasma. Both Antaleks and Daleks are capable of flight, but only Daleks have the shielding to allow for survival outside of the atmosphere. [Torchwood note: Antaleks can survive for approximately 4 minutes outside of the exosphere.]
Additional Clarification: The casings can be any color or pattern, not just plain or metallic although artists are free to make them however they wish.
What do Antaleks look like?
The creature inside the mechanical casing is depicted as soft and repulsive in appearance. The actual appearance of the mutants has varied, but often adheres to the Doctor's description of the species as "little green blobs". They can range from amorphous to crab-like to be mollusk-like with small tentacles, one or two eyes and an exposed brain. The number of “tentacles” ranges from 6 to 12, but typically come in even numbers. Since arriving on Earth, most Antaleks tend to appear more like the second, mollusk-like, version.
The voice of an Antalek is electronic. But where Daleks are apparently unable to make much more than squeaking sounds when out of its casing, Antaleks have adapted to speak in human languages. [Torchwood note: Some Antaleks have come to understand domestic canines and felines. Antaleks tend to be less communicative with felines though.]
Additional Clarification: Antaleks can be any color or pattern, not just "little green blobs" although artists are free to make them however they wish.
What is the lifespan of an Antalek?
Torchwood and Antaleks have collaboratively estimated the following: Antaleks can live for approximately 370 years in the wild. Ones with host families are predicted to live up to 550-600. It is unknown how long they may live if in an environment more similar to Skaro.
Where/How do Antaleks live?
[Torchwood note: There are three groups of Antaleks. Stationary Antaleks (SA) live permanently on the designated island. Integrated Antaleks (IA) live with a host family. Co-working Antaleks (CWA) live and work on Torchwood bases both on and off the island to help manage Operation: Coexist.]
Most of the Antaleks have remained colonized on an island of unknown location, which is protected and monitored by Torchwood. It is said to be rainforest-like with relatively calm weather patterns [Torchwood note: Antaleks prefer dry climates to tropical ones.] and no possibility of contact from humans. Little else is known about the island.
In a revolutionary effort encouraging Antaleks and humans to coexist, some people have been selected by Torchwood to host one or two Antaleks. Antaleks still remain true to their military-style heritage and refer to their host as their “Officer”. [Torchwood note: Some Antaleks, who have an extended residency, may come to refer to them as “Sir” or “Ma’am”; perhaps this is a transition phase towards comfortable familiarity between both parties?] Antaleks act in a similar manner as the World War II Daleks. They enjoy serving and interacting with humanity as part of a sincere effort to learn more about what is/is not acceptable in modern culture. For example, vaporizing the guard dog is not an acceptable response to its aggressive nature… nor is it acceptable to welcome the burglar, whom the guard dog was trying to stop, into the host family’s home as a guest.
How should I interact with an Antalek?
Although the presence of the Antaleks is known throughout the world, it is still uncommon to see one. This is obviously due to the fear instilled by the invasion of the Daleks a few Christmases ago.
If you should see one with its host family, feel free to converse and interact with it; just don’t bring up its past. If you are a host family, the Antalek is here to learn from you. If you keep it hidden away, the Antalek will become antisocial and possibly even more fearful of the outside world. But, if you truly take the initiative to integrate the Antalek into your community, it could become a valued and appreciated member of society. Antaleks generally will remain quiet unless invited to speak. The only time an Antalek may speak in an aggressive tone is when its Officer is threatened or when it sees someone eating seafood/sushi. [Torchwood note: Antaleks seem to be protective of any sea creature, particularly cephalopods.]
[Important Torchwood notice: If an Antalek becomes hostile, do not engage! Our AI monitoring systems should quickly recognize the psychological change and will send an alert to the nearest Antalek Response Team. Until they arrive, hide from the Antalek immediately, and pray it does not find you!]
Do Antaleks have names?
Unlike most Daleks, all of the Antaleks have taken on names! They can be anything they choose (or the host chooses). They range from completely alien to normal Earth names.
Can Antaleks Mate?
Daleks ‘reproduce’ by cloning cells from their body. However, some Antaleks have been reported as being able to mate with one another. [Torchwood note: Antaleks only reproduce twice, for reasons not revealed to us at this time.] Typically, there are 1 to 4 offspring produced. The survival rate of a newborn Antalek is approximately 70%. This is the result of two main factors. Most Antalek casings are man-made and therefore not of “dalekanium”; Torchwood fabricators are able to construct one case in the span of three to four weeks. During that period of time, the newborn Antalek must survive without any protection. The climate on Earth is very different from that on Skaro, so Antaleks cannot survive for very long outside of their casing. [Torchwood note: This time span commonly ranges from two to four weeks.]
Antaleks have companions?
What, only The Doctor can have companions? Of course not!
Antaleks prefer not to be alone. So, they will find someone/thing to have a special bond with. This friendship can only be found once in an Antalek’s lifetime. Antaleks will even sacrifice themselves to defend their companion.
Additional Clarification: Companions are decided by the host of the Antalek, not the artist. It may be a CS pet, character, etc. as long as it is yours.
Do Antaleks have any flaws?
-Antaleks’ casing (and, of course, the eye stalk) may be damaged by strong artillery.
-There are two recorded cases where an Antalek has contracted a disease. [Torchwood note: Both cases involved different illnesses, but both resulted in the death of the Antalek.]
-So far, there has only been one incident where an Antalek initiated an unprovoked attack on a human. [Torchwood note: This incident resulted in the human’s death.]
-Antaleks receive a capsule with various vitamins and components as a food source twice a day, every day. This capsule and its contents must not be tampered with. [Torchwood note: Antaleks are severely allergic to citrus fruits.]
-Antaleks do not have any general fears, although there have been several reported incidents where an Antalek may take “evasive maneuvers” around dump trucks. [Torchwood note: Apparently, an Antalek was once picked up by a dump truck, which supposedly mistakenly mistook the Antalek as a type of bin? The Antalek was later discovered back on the colonized island, where it has remained upon refusing to return to its host family for unrevealed reasons.]
