In a time not too long before now, there was a great eruption. A volcano that scientists had long
thought to be inactive began to stir, and with it came a fiery rain of lava onto the surrounding
area. Thankfully no lives were taken, as the whole of the island had been evacuated as soon as
small quakes were detected near the base of the volcano. Though, nothing could be done for
the surrounding wildlife; plants had been burned and most animals had tried to flee, which
left nothing but barren land, caked with ash and dried magma.
But from such destruction, something new was born. When everything had cooled off and it
was safe to return, a team of researchers were the first to explore the island. Through their
exploration, they found odd growths of crystals and gems that had undoubtedly come from
the eruption: but the scientists were baffled as to how they had sprung up so quickly and
were forming outside of such high temperatures. Upon further research they found a new
species of bird. Most of these were rather small in size, ranging from hummingbird-sized to
crow-sized. These birds seemed to flock about the patches of crystals that had cropped up,
making nests in them and raising young. On closer inspection, scientists found that the birds
themselves had crystal-like growths on their own bodies, which turned out to have the same
properties as the mysterious crystals. The scientists started off with giving them an overly
complicated name, which has since been forgotten, but when a french scientist's daughter
learned of the birds, she suggested a whole new name; and it stuck.
