Winterbacks are carnivorous creatures that tend to live in colder climates. Their name originates from their frozen homes and the (usually) abundant fluff that covers their backs. The largest pack they will ever be in is with their own mate and/or pup(s). Other than that, winterbacks are solitary hunters. They will eat any meat they can find, though they will only resort to cannibalism if starving. Their main weapon is their ferocious fangs, and they have an excellent sense of hearing.
For winterbacks, horns are a sign of masculinity. Large horns equals manly! Females can still sometimes have large horns, though this is rather rare. Regardless of gender, if two are romantically interested in the same winterback, they may fight each other to attempt to win the heart of their love interest. These battles rarely end in death, as the weaker opponent will retreat. A female will usually have a litter of two to four pups. Winterback pups are a little bigger than wolf pups, which accompanies the fact that the average adult winterback is a little larger than the average wolf.
Winterbacks may also have different quirks in their appearances. These quirks will usually not appear obvious in a winterback until they are nearing the end of their teenage years. Below is a list of all possible quirks and their rarities:
-One/both floppy ear(s).
This is very common, and in fact, the most common quirk. It will reduce their good hearing.
-No horns.
This is common, but not as common as floppy ears. A male with no horns will likely find getting a mate more difficult.
-Larger horns on a female.
The rarity for this varies, depending on the size. Medium horns are uncommon, large horns are rare, and ram horns are very rare. A female with large horns may have difficulty getting a mate.
-Shorter snout.
This is uncommon. Winterbacks with shorter snouts will have a little more difficulty breathing.
-Coloured pupil and black eye colour.
Usually, a winterback will have a black pupil, and the rest of the eye will be coloured. Yet having it the other way around is not unheard of. Sometimes, a winterback's eyes will be black where colour is supposed to be, and their pupil will be the coloured part of their eyes. However, this is very rare.
-Undergrown fluff.
This is a rather common quirk. Sometimes, a winterback's fur will not have grown as long as it should have. Considering their chilly natural habitats, this is not desirable.
-Overgrown fluff.
This is also rather common, though not as common as undergrown fluff. Just as a winterback will sometimes not grow enough fluff, it can also grow too much fluff!
