They normally have simple designs, with a limit of four main colors, then one eye color, one nose color and one feather color.
The males (shown above) tend to be brighter, and the brighter they are the more of a chance they have of getting a mate/passing on genes. They are nocturnal, and the feathers do actually propel them to fly. Every winter, they fly north (they live in South America).

Males are very protective and can turn in a second to protect there family and owner. To get a mate males must use their bright feathers to attract a mate. However if a male is born with dull feathers he has a lower chance of getting a mate.

Females are much more calm but they can act like males when in danger or their family or owner. Females are born with duller feathers and are attracted to males with bright feathers
