I bet you'd like to know what these strangely cute creatures are?
Well here, let me explain.
Grumple Puff Seals, also known as Grump / Pout Puff seals, are a very intimidating part of their habitat. They can weigh as much a 2 Tons [4,000 lbs]. Both males and females look about the same, but the females are slightly smaller, and are actually the dominant ones. The males grow larger horns/tusks that are used for display, defense, and digging through sand, mud, and rock to find food.
Diet:
They mostly eat shellfish / jellyfish, bird eggs, and bigger fish, such as bass or even tuna, but occasionally have a craving for rocks...yes, rocks.
Their powerful stomach can digest them which makes their..uh, droppings quite interesting, as they may contain gemstones that were trapped inside the rock.
Habitat:
They prefer cold climates, and have been known to withstand temperatures as low as -200 Degrees WITH gale force wind.
Despite their un-dynamic body looks, they are very good swimmers and can live in any water type: Fresh/salty, oceans/lakes/rivers, and even marshes - but are most common in vast bays / on the edges of where the rivers meet the ocean. Some are even known to climb up high rocky ledges and plateaus to sleep, escape danger, or just relax. They have very strong muscles under the fat, and rough, microscopic hooks on their undersides which seem to help them grip
They can adapt to almost anywhere, and they have a very unique ability. If things get too hot, they can shed their fur - and their body can also recede its fat layers by taking it in as energy - losing as much as 1,000 lbs.
Socialization:
Grumple Seals are like wolves - Consisting of close knit family groups with an alpha male/female, between 5 - 15 members, mostly related - sometimes accepting foreign Grumps for extra protection, knowledge, skills, warmth, etc. They communicate through soft, almost girly yelps, spits, snorts, teeth clapping, and tongue clicks which, oddly when heard, are said to be soothing and almost welcoming. They also use body language which is similar to a humans, including waving, grinning, and even laughing. They are very smart and curious and are quite approachable - as long as you don't do anything threatening near them. So, despite their angry look, they are the exact opposite.
Growth:
They are born alive, usually 1-3 at a time. They drink milk until around the age of 3-5 months depending on the season and amount of pups. The more, and warmer the weather, the faster they are weened.
As pups, they are very hyper and playful - often getting into some kind of mishap. They stick together in groups known as "classes" doing exactly what they were named for - learning, protecting, and growing up with together. Some are even known to split from the pack and create a family from those friends they gained when they are old enough [About 3 - 5 years], while others stay with their birth parent[s]. Pregnancy lasts about 5 months, and Grumple Seals have been known to live as long as 120 years old.
Other:
Grump Seals are also known to collect shells, rocks, and pretty much anything they find interested. Males have even been seen wearing seaweed and shells around their horns like jewelry, especially during the mating season. It seems the male with the most exotic object / adornment on their horns gets the most attention.
They Don't have many predators, except polar bears, killer whales, and man. But as pups, they are more vulnerable and have been known to be taken away by large eagles, fish, poisonous sea life - like larger jellyfish.
