So... what are Kata-plys exactly?
Well, let me tell you a story... once upon a time, there was a country called Denmark. A small girl sat by her window, staring out at the white and glistening snow, as she listened to the soft bells from the nearby church ringing Christmas chimes.
"Højt fra træets grønne top, stråler jule glansen..."
The girl sighed and gazed down at the streets, knowing however much she let her eyes wander across the beauty of Winter, the poor children were all outside, freezing, and loosing the happiness of Christmas.
But she would not let it stay like that. Getting out her sewing kit and extra blankets, she started cutting and stitching, prickling her fingers many times, yet still adding more things... until she ended up with a very lifelike creature. It was just a plush, yet it looked very magical, having it's own glow shining out of the eyes. The girl tilted her head to one side, and thought as she ran her fingers across the mane of the creature.
"I will name this a Kata-plys!" she then announced loudly. Yet that still was not all. Getting up over to her rich collection of stones and gems, she picked one out and placed it beside the Kata-plys. Blowing the creature a kiss, she placed it by the window, and soon joined her family, singing songs of joy and rebirth.
"Spillemand spil lystigt op, nu begynder dansen..."
And the dance of life truly began. While the girl celebrated Christmas, the Kata-plys blinked. Not once, not twice, but three times. Then it yawned. And then it moved.
It picked up the stone in it's paws, holding the girl's love and its life source close to itself, not ever letting it go. It was alive, and it was made for one purpose; to give the poor children love. With a flick of it's furry tail, and a glint in its eye, the Kata-plys was gone...
--and found by a nearby boy with no shoes and no family. The boy picked the creature up and clutched it to his heart. He felt the love of Christmas and the warmth from the girl's love. He found happiness.
Soon enough, the girl made another, and gave it a stone as well. She began tying a small label to each Kata-plys, adding a small message to each, so the finder would have something to treasure. The girl did this out of her heart, and soon many other children would feel the warmth of love.
"O, hvor den er blød og rar, sikken dejlig hue..."
Thanks for reading. The song is from a Danish Christmas song, called "Højt fra træets grønne top" text by Peter Faber.
