What are they?
Moorland Ponies are a compact sturdy breed that's consistently found on the moors and in the mountainous regions of the United Kingdom, where they were originally exclusive to before a few were domesticated. They are not an actual breed in themselves as it's thought they are simply a mix of different pony breeds and such that can already be found - hence their wide gene pools and colourations.
Their strong, well-boned legs, general sturdiness and bomb-proof nature makes them excellent for being children ponies, as well as valuable hacks and hunters. Because of it's origins it is noted for being exceptionally hardy and disease-resistance, with endurance to match. All in all though, they do not look much different to any other stocky pony breed.
Physical Description
They look very similar to other pony breeds native to the UK. Their heads are short and strong with thick necks that possess an arch of sorts when they move. Their heads are typically rather broad and are not dished like with certain Welsh breeds.
Their legs are a bit on the short side but are powerful nonetheless; these legs contribute greatly to their overall strength and agile movement. Their hocks are lightly feathered and their hooves round and sturdy to allow easy and steady movement over even the boggiest of terrains.
All year round their bodies are covered in a short woolly coat that more or less stays exactly the same even in the summer, although the dead hairs are shed regularly and therefore some of the darker ponies lighten in colour in the warmer months. Their manes and tails are made up of thick, coarse hairs that cannot be easily tamed. Most people prefer to have the manes hogged and tails cut short to avoid matting, however with regular grooming it's possible to keep them manageable.
The breed ranges between 12 hands and up to 15.3 hands, however anything bigger than 14.2 hh is usually uncommon. Regardless, all sizes make wonderful mounts for people of all ages and level of experience.
The Moorland may come most solid colours with bays, blacks, darker greys and chestnuts being the most common, however just about any colour is accepted. Because ponies from domesticated and feral backgrounds inter-bred with the wild herds at some point, pinto and appaloosas can also be found although are extremely rare, as is finding one with blue eyes. Human domestication has also helped to contribute to the wide-spread of colours. The only colours this breed cannot come in is grullo, white-grey and brindle. Dapples and roans are also allowed, but are fairly uncommon.
All white markings on the face and legs are allowed in the breed. Dun-coloured individuals may also have dorsal stripes and faded stripes along the legs.
Other unusual sorts of markings have also been discovered in this pony, particularly odd types of spotting and dappling that's yet to make an appearance in any other equine.
