To write or not to write. Debate!

Postby Flicka » Wed Jan 18, 2012 2:28 pm

So I got to thinking. how in adoptable shops some are strictly writting. Does this not take the fun out for people who can't write well? I've seen alot of discouraged people stop writing for something they really wanted. Now I've had someone claim ''that if people try and don't give up then they could do it too. Just saying 'Oh well golly gee, this person's grammer and spelling and punctuation is waay better then mine I might as well give up' is there own fault.'' I don't believe that as true. you can't write something better if your not even on the same level with them. I wanna know your oppinions do you prefer a shop that does all different contests and offers adoptable you have to ninja or a shop that does different contests and you can write for the adoptables? I will not state the name of the person who said it nor any contact all. this is a debate remember have fun!

I dunno. No offense but unless you're foreign/have disabilities I don't see any excuse for improper basic punctuation. By basic I mean periods, quotation marks, capital letters. Elementary stuff. Quality of writing is of course a whole 'nother thing. You can certainly get better with practice, but obviously not everyone's talents are weighted in creative writing. I've often looked at those contests, but I've never been really tempted to enter. On the other hand, in the art contests I've been tempted to enter I never did because I'm not kidding around when I say I have no artistic talent what-so-ever when it comes to drawing. So I guess I can see where you're coming from.

Addressing the matter, I think a mixture of all sorts of adoptable shops. :3 I mean, no matter what the criteria is for "winning" someone's always going to get the shorter end. Ninja adopts are hard because they're like the pound.

From the view point of the shop owner, having some sort of contest, especially a writing one, tells you a ton about the potential owner. Anywhere you go in the real world will have some application based on writing skill. {College applications, job applications, etc.}

Just my opinion. Although, I'm not sure if this belongs in the Debate Forum?

Edit: I just realized we don't have a debate thread, do we? For some reason I was convinced we had one. /sigh Unless I totally just went blind.

There are many things to consider in this issue:

1) Chickensmoothie is an english-based site. If you can't write even just basic english you're going to have trouble connecting with the other members in every aspect of the site.
2) The shop/adoptable owner has the right to give away their things in a way that makes them comfortable and gives them an easier time to control and dispense their work. For the most part, this is not intending to deny people with poor english, merely making their life a little easier.
3) With most adoptables, there was some sort of unique idea or thought behind the image, and when you give that image away, you want someone who adopts it to either have a likeminded view or impression of the image, or perhaps better impression, in order for that adoptable to be put to good use. Giving things away or adopting things for the sake of adopting them would seem to be undermining the time and dedication put in by the artist with each adoptable, even if some look more time-dedicated than others, the fact it's there shows they want to give others something they worked on and make others happy.
4) If you don't feel like you can apply to things, perhaps you could spend some time by yourself or with a friend working on some pretend applications, or making up some stories or ideas to help you improve your writing and application style for story-based adoptables. if you already have adoptables with no story, start there? Make them up some stories or adventures, it will give you a better idea of how a character is more than a pretty picture that you paid a dog for.
5) If you really don't want to write, find other adoptables :) There are plenty out there that are given away strictly for pets, for free, by random draw/lotto, or by custom order. There's no limit to what you can acquire if you search.

I personally prefer adoptable shops that give at least some away with an even opportunity, like number draws or random generated pick or whatnot. In example with some of my old adoptables, you can get them first serve (or ninja), by random selection, by story, by quiz question, etc. You really can find some good stuff out there without having to be a Charles Dickens :)

nope no debate thread... sadly but i think with everyone wanting to debate certain things, the thread be highly un-organized since debates usually take awhile for any subject really. thank you it so intreguing what other people have to say.
