Anybody play Bassoon?

Yush,finally another bassoon. xD I have some important band concert,and my director told me I passed pass-offs with flying colors. :3

That's what my band teacher does.We only have to pass off because of a concert we're having.What kind of reeds do you use?

I own one of my own.It's from a some not very well known company named Schott.
I don't make my own reeds,but I'll order from Forrests.com or buy one my my private tutor.
Another topic,I am not in marching band.Because I'm a bassoon and the parents won't let me learn trombone. D: I think it would be cool to have bassoons in marching band,but MAN those things can heavy!

You're lucky you have one! I buy my reeds from the music store. I use Lesher medium soft reeds. I was in marching band in high school, and I was in honor guard. I normally play the trumpet in concert band. I just play the bassoon on my own for fun. I haven't done it lately, though, because I graduated from high school and I don't have a bassoon to use.

There are also a couple other reasons why they don't use bassoons in marching band (unfortunately). They are fragile and expensive to repair, and they don't use double reeds in MB because they aren't usually cheap and can easily brake. I also heard that you could choke on them or something. I'm not sure if that's true, though.

I recognize all those reasons,but I just wish they would make a marching band bassoon,you know?One that wouldn't break when you dropped it,durable reed...Then again,that could be a whole nother instrument.Have you guys been thinking about playing contra?I really want to. D:

Yeah, it would be cool if they could. I've never thought of playing the contra. You should, that would be awesome!

Thanks for the encouragement! x3 I would love to play contra in the band.People would be all like "Woa,Nef,dat's a low in-stro-mint!"And I'D be all like "OH AYE NO RIIIIIGHT"

I got to play the Contra this weekend when I went to Double Reed Day at JMU. It was really cool, but the reed was huge and it was extremely hard to get a sound out. And my thumb could barely reach the octave G key (I have short thumbs)

There were lots of bassoons, oboes, and englih horns there (and two contras). I went with some people from my school and I said "Oboes are weird" a little to loudly and all the oboes in the room just turned and looked at me.

You're lucky! I want to go to a Double reed event like that!

Do you know the rest thing that you can use between your thumb and fingers on the right hand (on the regular bassoon)? I have to take that off, or my fingers don't reach the keys.

I used to not like oboes at first, I thought their sound stuck out from the band in a bad way. Now I like them a lot. Not enough to play or anything, though.
