I don't really like people classifying children as "gifted". It seems at a young age, this usually goes to their head, causing them to look down at the "normal" people who aren't "good at everything like they are." Not saying everyone on this thread is an arrogant little brat, but it seems once someone classifies you as something that gives you a status above others, you immediately believe you are unique and special and look down on mediocrity.

Maybe it's just me and my idealism, but I believe that everybody is good at something, and no one has perfect qualites. Perfect doesn't exist in humans; it's a meaningless word because nothing can be perfect.

I guess what I'm trying to get at here, is that everyone is gifted with life. Everyone is gifted with something, some skill, whatever. And these "gifted" people are really no better then us normal people. Sure, a Gifted Person is good at math, but if you threw them in the middle of a wolf-ridden wood with a bow and arrow, would they be able to survive?

I think it mostly with 11-14 year olds that they have to scramble to name that "they're gifted and unique" but as you get older, the cold hard truth hits you that you're really not. >.< Unique, I mean.

Sorry for this really depressing post. I hope I didn't offend anyone.

No, it's fine. I get what you're are saying completely. I think because if someone is gifted in math and someone else gifted in...let's say, survival skills. The person in math gets recognized and the other person's skill goes under the radar. I think it's not about whether you are gifted or not, but if people chose to care.

Just butting in here~

@Cobrastyle: Nobody in my gifted group looks down on anyone else because they aren't gifted. There are a number of people who actually don't want to be in the group because they think it sets them apart from their friends ... honestly a lot of people aren't really different from anyone else or incredibly smart and good at many things. I understand what you're saying, though. If the wrong person gets put into the group, it could certainly go to their head. I also agree that everyone is good at something, everyone has a talent.

Honestly, most people who are "gifted" aren't very different or super special. I know some people who are incredibly intelligent, and are happy to be part of the group because they can meet people who have similar interests and have an intelligent discussion about something both people enjoy ... (That's why I was exited to join, anyway ...) but most of the group are pretty much regular people.

I am gifted :P lol. I took the test in 1st grade (got a 100 percent). A lot of my friends are in my PEN class. We don't know what P.E.N. stands for... but we like to call ourselves the Pennsylvanian Educated Nerds :P

people on this thread probably care more about her opinion more than your "gorgeous boyfriend shay fletcher".

I do! XD

lilprincess, if you have an A+ in Literature, why can't you spell properly or recognize that you are making several grammar mistakes? I do not want to be mean, but I have a hard time believing anything that you have said so far on this thread. Riches are not everything in life- family is. A gorgeous boy isn't who you should be looking for. I would search for a boy that has brains and who treats you well. The whole 'most popular girl in a private school' thing? How does that relate to being gifted? Appreciate what you have, but don't brag about it.

@Cobrastyle: I can't agree with you more. Having a gift means zilch. It looks really fancy and nice, but if you don't try, trust me, you'll do badly. There's so much more to life than how smart/talented you are. It's useless if you have no friends or can't get along with people. I love that I can think the way I do, but that doesn't mean much in life. I'm not perfect. In fact, I probably have the EQ of a dead donkey. In fact, it's all pressure right now, and I'm currently wishing I'd never taken the stupid test. I've never really met anyone else with a high classification. In South Africa, you only get tested if there's something suspected to be wrong with your intelligence. That's why I'm so excited.

@Spacegirl: There's no such thing as a 'Gifted group' here. In fact, they don't even stream classes in my school. And my school's a pretty good one. It's not a private school, but it's pretty good. I'm not sure if people are tested regularly in other parts of the world. Is there a certain age that kids get tested?

@lilprincess: Not only is 'adopting' wild animals probably illegal, it's also not helping them very much. I'm very sorry, but I'm probably not the only one finding what you're writing to be bordering on absurd.

I'm bad at a lot of things. But that doesn't mean I don't try!

In math I try to understand and I do the best I can, but I just don't get it. But that doesn't mean I'm stupid. Nor does it mean I'm not gifted. It simply means I'm no good at math.

Everyone is good at something, and everyone is gifted in some way. And by sorting some kids into a group labeled 'Gifted' that basically means you're shoving everyone else into a group labeled 'Not Gifted.' Which to me is very wrong.

Everyone should be treated equally, no matter how 'smart and gifted' you are.

When I was in third grade there was a really arrogant girl who was always talking about how great she was. I didn't like her that much, but my two best friends accepted her, so I hung out with her some time.
One day on the playground, she was acting mopey for some weird reason, and when we asked her why she went into this monologue about how she was TAG and that the next year the school wouldn't have any good material for her. She didn't mention why this was, or what would happen because of it. She just seemed really interested in telling us about how smart she was.
Well, I wasn't amused, and decided that I never wanted to be like her.
A year later, I took the test, and guess what? Turns out I'm TAG too. Not only that, I most likely beat her score, as there weren't many people I didn't exceed.
Now, I keep quiet about it. If a teacher hands me something that has to do with it, I put it away before anyone can see what it is. Last year, there was a survey for TAG students in our district. Out of my whole class, I was one of the two people that had to leave to take it. I ran out of there as fast as possible, and when I returned I tried to act as though I hadn't missed half the period.

The truth is, I'm not afraid of being labeled a nerd, or a geek. That's not my worry, in fact I embrace the terms. My greatest fear is that I will end up like my friend from third grade, and either come of as arrogant or hurt people who want things to come naturally like they do for me. I didn't choose to have this brain, and although I would never trade it for anything in the world, I also hope I never hurt anybody because of it.
I am a holibomber!
I have gifted _5_ people.
I have received _1_ gifts.

Gifted? So shouldn't every human being on earth be part of this then. A test means nothing. I took a test and people who got lower scores then me were gifted, everyone was suprised I wasn't. To be honest I didn't care. They sould be helping the less gifted and not giving more support to those who don't really need it.

Making students gifted is probably just another way of the school getting funding. I'm now gifted now I'm college becuase I' in the top 10% of the college based on GCSE scores. Only becuase everyone else from the school left. I got 1 A* at GSCE and every other "Gifted" person got at least 3. It means nothing at school except you get to go on trips. Whopty doo.

Every person is gifted in their own way. So being gifted is a opion. People call me gifted in art, yet I barely passed my As level (I passes by 3 marks, so 4 marks less and I would have failed) I got 53/100, 50 was a pass, so I barely got half marks. But people would consider me gifted.

So they tested you on athletic ability too? There are many gifted atheletes but I bet that test didn't include them right?

Sorry this turned into more of a rant then a constructive thing.
