It's a marketing decision based on most men's opinion that drinking Diet Soda is a feminine thing. It should be pretty obvious that their target audience wasn't women at all. After all they can't appeal to everyone.
Also it's kinda like those comedy movies that are completely sexist but no one calls them sexist because they are funny.

Honestly, men are still going to think it's a feminine thing because they're still being forcefed the idiotic views by the marketing systems. Light beer ads? All men in them havin' a ball. In real life? "light beer is gay/for ladies/something to that effect".
