Bring me the head of your science textbook!

Postby Harpalyce » Thu Jun 09, 2011 9:21 am

...no seriously, bring it, I wanna see.

*ahem*

HI, I'm working on building a portfolio as a science writer/cartoonist. Problem is, I don't know what I should write about. That's why I need your help, O Most Wise ChickenSmoothie, since the majority of players here are in the school-age kid range I'd like to be writing for.

So -

What are you talking about in your science class right now?
Is there something you think is interesting that you want to know more about?
Is there something you just don't 'get'?
(ESPECIALLY when it comes to biology, since that's what my degree is in!)

Do you like your textbook?
Would it be better if it were a comic book? (TRICK QUESTION, OF COURSE IT WOULD, RIGHT ;V)
If you really like your textbook, I'd love to know the name and author! (Same for if you really really hate it!)

More importantly -
What would YOU want to read a short comic about, when that comic is explaining some scientific concept?

So far I've got these ideas bouncing in my head:
-What are Prions?
-How Cancer Happens
-What Makes an Animal an Animal

Any more ideas would be greatly appreciated!

In science, we're talking about wind energy and constructing mini windmills
I think science and theories along the lines of how the universe was created/how it works and stuff about black holes and other things related to space are really interesting
The whole thing about independant and dependant variables I find rather confusing

I don't use my science textbook often, but it seems ok :P

I would love a short comic about [again] things related to space and the universe and stuff

Hope that helped a little bit :3

This is such a clever idea. Please post the comics for us to read when you are done!

I had "Plants and Society" 4th edition for my Plant Bio course. It was actually a pretty good book..for a biology textbook, I actually didn't mind reading it. We got to use an Electron scanning microscope in that class, and it was only a 100 level!

I remember in highschool I had a HUGE issue with mitosis and meiosis. I get it now, but for some reason I just didn't understand it then. That might make a good comic.

Mitosis and meiosis would be a GREAT topic! Thank you! :) I totally will post comics to read - I'm looking to make some samples, little 2-5 page selections, to hopefully get hired on permanently in a PR/science writing sort of role. Or at least freelance a bit. ^^

Right now in science we're talking about the "Big Bang"
I want to know more about the multiverse
Everything.

My textbook is boring and blue D:
HELL YES.

I would want to read a comic about basically anything thats interesting in science.
lolol

I did a whole project on criminology in high school that was so much fun XD We faked a killing and had to figure out who the murderer was, twas so much fun I loved all my science lessons because of that project

Something on criminology would be really cool! :D Thanks for that idea! A murder mystery type setup would be quite cool, maybe discussing blood types or the like.

Any more ideas?

Something that seriously confused me was the nervous system.
Oh, and off topic, a few minutes ago you were at exactly 1234 posts XD
I could be wrong, though.

The most confusing thing to me this year in science was the weather unit. Oh, and some things in genetics. Haha, somebody already beat me to meiosis xD
An idea you might be able to use is one we did for a project: we wrote a short-story about a water molecule going through the water-cycle without using words like 'evaporation' or 'melting.'

We're out of school now but we did a ton on DNA last year and it was BORING. I was ready to beat myself to death by the end of the year. We also learned about evolution and the taxonomic categories. It would be cool if you did somethig interesting on evolution, the evolutionary tree, and on taxonomic classifications.

We alo learned about monocots, dicots, etc in plants, and how to distinguish them, and things like xylem, phloem, and all sorts of stuff about fungi, lichens, molds, etc.

It didn't help that my teacher was a psychopath and picked on me with the rest of the class, but ah, well. It's high school.
