Seriously, he's her trusted mentor/partner for three books and then suddenly he gets "tired" of being on the losing side and totally betrays their mission? Why not introduce a new character (you conveniently provided one specifically for this mission) and have him be the traitor? I don't care that he's the main character's love interest! Well, maybe a little. But rather him than her partner!
