I bit my cheek to stop me from going to find Theo as I exited my tent. I couldn’t let him rule my life, I just couldn’t. I walked across camp with my head held high, and entered Jared’s tent quietly as to not disturb him. He sat on his bed looking at his fingers when I entered. I coughed, alerting him of my presence.
The beta of the Werepack jolted upright, but visibly relaxed when he noticed it was only me. I smiled softly. “Sorry ‘bout that, Jared.” I apologized, sitting back down on the floor. Soon he joined me.
“What-” He began, but I cut him off with a wave of my hand. He nodded, understanding that it wasn’t something I wished to talk about right now. I nodded in a patronising way. Why couldn’t he figure that out beforehand? I sighed.
Jared cleared his throat briskly. “Okay, back to the lesson.” Jared quietly went through the steps of shifting. “You’ve got to imagine you are the animal, that its blood is your own. When you feel that, imagine its own body as yours.” As he explained, he demonstrated, letting a mirage of fur ripple over his extended hand and forearm. “Now, you try.”
I nodded a reply, concentrating on my arm. I imagined it as how it would look if I were a wolf and what it would feel like. Then I closed my eyes and breathed deeply, keeping a calm aurora around myself as I worked up an image of myself as a wolf. When I opened my eyes a moment later, the world tilted at an alarming rate. My vision shifted and it went blurry at the edges. I cried out in surprise and I felt the strong grip of Jared at my back and arms. He kept me upright, and held his head next to mine, as he spoke reassurances to me.
“Easy. Just relax.” His voice was low and tickled the hair around my ear when he spoke.
