I might want to quit. :c I feel like I can't catch up. I'm a slow typer, have quite a bit of homework over the weekend, and I don't have much motivation to actually do the writing. What's in it for me? I'm not planning on selling this book, working on it more, anything. Why do I need to do this?

because sense of accomplishment! you'll be like "hey I can write an entire novel in 1 month"!
and if you reach your goal, then you get 5 free bound copies of your novel c:

    Really? c: Sounds nice.

But is there anything other than the accomplishment? Struggling for a month to write 50K equals a feeling of pride and accomplishment. Yes, I can see what you mean, but I won't have time for pretty much anything next week, and I know I'll fall behind again. :c I don't want to quit, but unless I meet 50K by November I won't feel as proud of myself. </3 What bout motivation? As long as its not food or anything like that, what can I do to make myself WANT to write more? ono

Image
Why? Because I'd hate to see you quit.

Okay, so motivation?
Tell every single person you encounter that you are doing Nanowrimo.
Ask them to keep you accountable.
Everyday at school, someone will say,
"How many words you get yesterday?"
"Are you caught up on your novel?"
"Reached your daily word count recently?"

If nothing else, your pride will make you write.
Its horrible to have to say,
"No, I didn't reach my goal. I quit."
to everyone you asked to keep you accountable.
So you CAN'T quit.
You keep writing.

Also, did you read the pep talk by the author of Tale of Desperoux? (Didn't spell that right...)
Her thing was all about how her motivation was that someone named Gary didn't think she could do it.
Everyday he told her she'd never do it. Everyday she went home to write 2 pages and prove him wrong.
Don't just do it for the people who believe in you, do it for those who don't.
You write that book, then you hit those people who didn't believe you could do it. Hit them with your book.
Image
Also, 50K sounds like a BIG goal in a month.
And it is.
But that's okay.
Just work on that 1667 words a day.
That seems smaller, rigght?

What I've been doing is writing for only 15 minutes an hour.
I write from 1:00 to 1:15, 2:00 to 2:15, etc.
If you can get 500 words in 15 minutes, then it will take you 4 hours of NON-continuous writing to get your goal.
That's only one hour of actual writing a day.
Do whatever you want for 45 minutes- then write for a measly 15.
15 minutes isn't a lot.
But 15 minutes can help you get that 1667 words.
And that 1667 words will help you get that 50K.

Do it for yourself. Do it for those who believe in you. Do it for those who don't. Do it for the satisfaction. Do it for the free copies of your novel.
And do it because you are a person that loves to write, and having an actual product of that passion is an amazing thing.

@kimmy- I think that should be a NaNoWriMo Pep talk. Seriously, those are probably the only reasons why I do it. 1. To say I wrote a book, 2. To prove that I can to people that think I can, 3. To prove to people that don't think I can that I can, 4. To prove to myself, and 5. To be able to tell myself 'This is easy, I can write 50k words in a month, I can do this no problem!'

I thought the exact same thing when I read it ^^

Yeah, half of my motivation is just proving that I can do it. And because, well, last year, I think pretty much everyone secretly expected me to fail. Of course they were far too nice to say it, but I know they thought it.
I'm not really the type of person that is known for being good at "commitment", so it's kind of reasonable to expect me to give up and not finish, just like I usually do with my other projects.

That's why I plowed through last year, even writing the last 20,000 words in three days just so I could prove it to everyone.

And I'm going to do it all over again this year. ^^

Also, that's the other thing Postcard, even if you fall behind it is possible to catch up in the last couple days if needed. I was behind all month last year (literally, all. There was not a single day where I was actually on schedule. As you can see by my stats for that year.) but I managed to win anyway by spending my every spare moment writing during those last three days.

Why do my characters keep doing this to me?

One of them is currently trying to be in two places at once, another is trying to start a romantic relationship with someone that I did not intend to put in a romantic relationship at all, another suddenly decided to completely change her identity and her name, and another (incidentally very important) character refuses to participate in the story entirely!

#that moment when your clock still hasn't switched to the new day but apparently NaNo's has, so your word count is added to the wrong day

GRR. This is twice it's happened now. I know I'm pushing it, but later is when I have time to type. =_=

You can change your timezone on Nanowrimo so that it matches yours. It's under "My NaNoWriMo" and then "Edit User Settings."

I replied to this over PM, but I'm going to say this again- Thank you so much. <3 This means so much to me, and I'll keep struggling through the month to finish. c:
