I use a lot of complicated words and metaphorical/symbolic speech and barely understand what I wrote afterwards but for some reason it looks brilliant. I write for a YA age group since I am a teenager but I certainly don't try to dumb anything down, unfortunately I don't pay attention to the exact vocabulary which I use so I can't post any of my best words.

I don't use any fancy words. I write for my age group and unfortunately many of them don't even know the difference between there, their and they're. I find that pretty sad.

Really what age group would that be? 2nd graders or younger? (Not referring to your intelligence but rather the idea that younger people would be that bad grammatically and not have any insight.) Really, I think most children are more intelligent than people (sometimes including other children) give them credit for. I am a young teenager but I could tell the difference between there, their and they're when I was in 2nd grade, it's not like most people are idiots... I almost write poetically sometimes, as in it may be hard to understand what I wrote but it certainly sounds nice and makes you think.

I have just found out what song I write to the best. This one
I wish I could say I was kidding, but I just wrote 500 words while listening to this.

Ah, it feels so good to write again. This weekend with writers block sucked.

I dumb down some things by habit. My friends say I talk in riddles and use different meanings for words that they didn't know. It really is problematic at times. You'd think my friends would have a wider vocabulary since they are all 18,19, or 20. X'D

I love using big words and making my readers dig up a dictionary to figure out what it means. Mwhaha! Plus the English language is so full of great words, why wouldn't you use them? It's obscurantism!

Anyway I know many teens and preteens who love vocab and use vocab words all the time. When you're writing for teens, the majority isn't going to read it - it's the kids who do read and like a little challenge that will read it. You should write for yourself first, so if you like big words add 'em! If you just don't like big words, well that's fine too. Personally as a reader I like finding a new word or two in a book.

I'm in high school. And I'm talking mainly about the people in my school. I'm pretty sure other people my age have a better vocabulary. Plus I'm sort of used to dumbing stuff down a little so my friends can understand me.

Oh, I always feel stupid when talking since I am naturally extremely socially awkward. I say 'um' and 'like' between almost every word when talking and I need to plan out what I am going to say before I say it, if I don't I often stumble to find a way to phrase something and just stop talking or start mumbling weirdly until I think of a way to phrase it by which time everyone is on a new subject. I also act dumber around others on purpose a bit if I think they wouldn't like me when I'm acting smarter (I know, I know, that in itself is a very dumb thing to do). To me writing is more a way I can show that I am not a total idiot and I can have insight and write beautifully if I have time. People who know me usually are confused by how my writing conflicts with my personality... I also strongly dislike books that are dumbed down for the YA age group, it makes me feel the author is disconnected from average teenagers.

I <3 big words! And making my characters talk funny. XD Like saying things like, "Heed my word, for without it, you might as well cease your journey now." Or "Perhaps it was his voice; so calming, even as it spoke of vengeance and demise." Me and my cousin made a parody of the song
"I like big butts."
It was something like,
"I like big words and I can not lie! You other scholars can't deny; when a guy walks in an' says an itty-bitty word; You. Get. Sprung!" XD Plus the rest, but I don't remember it
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`
My little brothers, ages 6 and 4, have big voccabularys... they just can't pronounce things correctly XD Like one time, they went up to my sister and this was the conversation
4 year old bro=L
6 year old bro=d
Older Sis- J
~~~~~~~~~~~`
D- J! J! L is being a nuisent!
L- No I not! D is being onoxious!

Nuisent- Nuisance
Onoxious- Obnoxious

@Kimmy
Wow..that's amazing that your little brothers have a large vocabulary! It makes them easier to understand.
And I love your parody for of that song!
