I HAVE A QUESTION!
TYPE OF QUESTION: Science (Biology)
YOUR QUESTION: I need to explain the Three Domain System of classification, but first I need to understand the word phylogenetic. What does it mean in layman's terms?? "relating to the evolutionary development and diversification of a species or group of organisms, or of a particular feature of an organism." Any help is really appreciated~

Essentially, this refers to how organisms and different species have evolved to be different from one another. This definition is also referring to the history of the development of unique features- so you might, say, examine the evolution of wings of a bat from a mammalian ancestor that lacks wings, and its relationship with other animals that have developed wings (or related animals that did not develop wings at all). The culmination of the observations related to a specific topic (be it ancestry, whether or not an organism is parasitic, wing development in bats vs birds, etc.) and these relationships can be visualized in a phylogenetic tree.

    Here's an example of a phylogenetic tree referring to wings!
    Image

    And here's another phylogenetic tree, which compares echolocation instead.

    And here's one more phylogenetic tree (the one I'm more used to seeing, personally) just showing the evolution of bats over time. The diversification is the splitting of one species into many and development of different features.

TLDR phylogenetics are what these pictures are trying to convey; evolutionary methods and relationships.

To find the area of a circle, you can use the formula:

a = pi r squared, which is A=πr2

You will need to find the radius of a circle, which should always be given. If not, you'll be given the diameter.

Image

If you are given the diameter (shown below), you can find the radius by dividing the diameter by two.

Image

Next, plug your radius into the formula above, which is A=πr2. (Plug it in place of the r)
You can use 3.14 instead of using π (pi), which will still provide a fairly accurate answer.

If you do this, you can multiply 3.14 x r2.
r2 is just squaring your radius, which you can do by multiplying your radius times itself.

After you square your radius, you can multiply it by 3.14 to get the area of a circle!

Example

Image

Looking at this circle, you can see that the diameter is three. We know that the radius is half of the diameter, so we can divide 3 by 2 to get the radius.

3/2 = 1.5

Now you can plug it into your area formula (which once again, is A=πr2)

Now we've got A=π x 1.5(1.5)

If we square 1.5 by doing 1.5 x 1.5, then we get 2.25.

Now we have got A=π x 2.25

Using 3.14 for pi, we can now do: A = 3.14 x 2.25

3.14 x 2.25 = 7.065

This means that the area of the circle is 7.065 yards

      Linear equations are always going to use the same equation of y=mx+b. If you were able to find your y-intercept, you will find that the x-intercept isn't that much different. (:

      Image

      As you can see in the image above, we are using the formula y+2x+2, where both m and b are set to 2 for simplicity's sake.
      If you want to find your x-intercept, replace your "y" value with 0, then solve for x.

      If you want further explanation feel free to PM me.

    I'm not really sure what you mean by "multiplication" in this context. c: If you have a specific question or example you could provide, that would be amazing.

    However, in general, here's how you'd solve linear equations:
    (1) Graphically
    A couple replies ago, Shy showed you how to find intercepts. So, if you have two functions, find each one's x- and y-intercepts, and draw a line through them, then check where they intersect.

    (2) Algebraically - you can also use this one to check that your result from (1) is correct.
    Let's say you have y=3x+5 and y=-6x-4, right?
    At the intersection, the x value and y value of both functions will be the same (hence, intersection).
    You could equate your xs, but because they're in the middle of the equations, they're a bit hard to get to. So, instead, equate your two ys, you get 3x+5=-6x-4. There's only one variable now - great, it can be solved.
    Solve by grouping common variables:
    3x+5 = -6x-4
    3x+6x = -4-5
    9x = -9
    x = -1
    Because the y-values are also the same, you can insert the x you just found into either of the two equations you started out with.
    I'll do both just to check:
    y = 3(-1)+5 = 2
    y = -6(-1)-4 = 2
    Therefore, the intersection is at (-1, 2).
